Authorities in Bihar’s Bagaha have warned residents not to consume unfamiliar fish that have entered flood-affected areas along with floodwaters flowing in from Nepal, amid fears of contamination. Bagaha SDM Chandni Kumari issued the advisory after reports of people falling ill from eating such fish.
The advisory, issued by the Fisheries Division of Bihar’s Animal and Fisheries Resources Department in public interest, comes as swollen rivers from Nepal continue to push floodwaters into parts of the district.
A report by Prabhat Khabar quoted SDM as saying that unidentified and unusual-looking fish species have been swept into local water bodies along with the flood surge — and several people who ate them have since reported falling sick, prompting officials to urge extra caution.
During floods, fish from ponds, rivers, lakes and other water bodies get swept far from their original habitats along with the current, officials explained.
In the process, they can come into contact with contaminated drains, dead animals and other polluted matter — exposing them to bacteria, viruses and fungal contamination.
Treating every fish caught from floodwaters as safe to eat, the administration cautioned, could put residents at serious risk.
The Animal and Fisheries Resources Department said fish caught from floodwaters should not be consumed until water levels return to normal and conditions stabilise.
Officials have specifically flagged unfamiliar or unusual-looking fish, appealing to residents to avoid catching, buying, selling or eating them altogether until their identity and safety can be confirmed by the relevant department.
The administration has advised anyone who experiences vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, dizziness, breathing difficulty or any other unusual symptoms after eating such fish to seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health centre or hospital, rather than waiting out the symptoms at home.
People who come across such fish have been asked to inform the district fisheries officer or local administration rather than acting on their own. Officials also urged residents not to pay heed to rumours, and to prioritise caution over convenience when it comes to eating anything caught from floodwater.
With water levels in several rivers still elevated and floodwaters continuing to alter the course of local water bodies, officials say further movement of fish into new areas remains likely. The administration’s appeal, SDM Kumari reiterated, is simple: when in doubt about a fish’s origin or identity, residents should avoid consuming it until it has been officially verified as safe.
Repeated, long-term exposure from eating fish caught in contaminated water bodies can lead to adverse effects on the nervous system.
