New Delhi: 'Vande Mataram', the national song to be played before the national anthem at all government events and in all schools, said the Union Home Ministry in new rules issued on Wednesday morning. The rule also mentions all the people to stand up when 'Vande Mataram' is played.
Earlier the compulsion was made only for national anthem, i.e., 'Jana, Gana, Mana'.
The new rule also states, the national song to be played at civilian awards ceremonies, like Padma awards along with various other events attended by the President, during their arrival and departure. It will also be played in public spaces like cinema halls. Although standing has not made mandatory in this case.

In addition, Vande Mataram shall be played at any other occasion in respect of which the govt of India has issued an enabling order.
The order states, before the national song is to be played, there will be a drumroll, an instrument like 'mridang' or trumpet shall be played. And in a marching drill, there will be seven steps leading to start of national song.
With that, MHA also mentioned that the national song would be sung at all cultural events and occasions where the national flag is being hoisted. All six stanzas of the national song must be sung at such events.
The morning school assembly in all government aided and non aided schools must incorporate group singing of the national song as per Ministry of Home Affairs guidelines.
And, under the law, any person who disrupts, or prevents others from respecting, the national anthem (and now the national song) can be sentenced to a maximum of three years in jail.
With that all the six stanzas, including the four removed by Jawaharlal Nehru government in 1937, will also be played.
The home ministry order dated 06.02.2026 lays down the 'official version' of the song-encapsulating all six stanzas of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's original composition. The duration for which the song shall be played shall be 3 minutes and 10 seconds," the order states while laying down the occasions on which the 'Vande Mataram' shall be sung or played as well as the protocols to be observed in due honour of the national song
The Ministry of Home Affairs rules also synchronize with the celebration of 150th anniversary since the creation of the song.
