Natasha Lyonne Opens Up About Relapse: ‘Anyone Out There Struggling, Remember You’re Not Alone’
Natasha Lyonne has never shied away from telling her story and she isn't starting now. In a deeply honest moment on social media, the actor and filmmaker has shared that she has relapsed after years of sobriety, using her own experience to remind others that recovery is not a straight line.
The Poker Face star, 46, revealed the update through a series of candid posts on X on Friday evening, January 23. Lyonne first wrote, “Took my relapse public more to come."
A few hours later, she expanded on her message, explaining why she chose to speak openly about a deeply personal struggle. “Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone out there struggling, remember you're not alone. Grateful for love & smart feet," she wrote.
Lyonne also connected her recovery journey to her upcoming creative work. “Gonna do it for baby Bambo," she added, referring to a project about hockey player Sophie “Bambo" Braverman, which she has written and is set to direct.
In a longer, reflective post, Lyonne continued to speak directly to those dealing with similar challenges. “Stay honest, folks. Sick as our secrets. If no one told ya today, I love you. No matter how far down the scales we have gone, we will see how our experience may help another. Keep going, kiddos. Don't quit before the miracle. Wallpaper your mind with love. Rest is all noise & baloney."
The actor entered rehab in 2006 and has previously spoken publicly about her struggles with addiction in the early 2000s. In a 2012 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lyonne described that period of her life candidly, saying, “Spiraling into addiction is really, really scary."
Reflecting further on that time, she added, “It's weird to talk about. I was definitely as good as dead, you know? A lot of people don't come back. That makes me feel wary, and self-conscious. I wouldn't want to feel prideful about it. People really rallied around me and pulled me up by my f—ing bootstraps."
Lyonne has continued to approach the topic with openness over the years. In a 2017 interview with The Guardian, the Russian Doll actor said she had no issue speaking freely about addiction. “I'm such an open book that I have no problem talking about it and speaking freely, but I've sort of said my piece on the subject," she said, before adding, “The truth is, at the back of that addiction are feelings that so many of us have, that don't go away."
She also reflected on the emotional weight of adulthood and self-compassion, saying, “Isn't everyone entitled to a moment of existential breakdown in a lifetime? Adulthood is making peace with being kind to oneself when a response to life that's so much more organic and immediate would be to self-destruct."
