Naomi Osaka Exits Australian Open Because Of Injury: 'I Cannot Risk Doing Any...'
2021 Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka, on Saturday, January 24, announced that she is withdrawing from the ongoing Grand Slam due to an injury, although she didn't give any details of what the issue is or how long the break might be.
Osaka announced the decision on Instagram, explaining that she pulled out to ‘address something my body needs attention for'.
Osaka was supposed to take on local talent Maddison Inglis in the third round on Saturday, and the latter will now receive a walkover.
“I have had to make the difficult decision to withdraw to address something my body needs attention for after my last match. I was so excited to keep going and this run meant the most to me, so having to stop here breaks my heart," Osaka wrote on her Instagram story.
“But I cannot risk doing any further damage, so I can get back on court," Osaka said. The four-time major champion, who won the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021, left a massive mark on the tournament.
Osaka grabbed headlines at the season's first Grand Slam when she walked onto Rod Laver Arena for her opening-round match in a bold, jellyfish-inspired outfit that went viral.
Osaka's white umbrella, matching wide-brimmed hat and long gauzy veil were complemented by a sleeveless turquoise dress over pleated white trousers.
But Osaka found herself caught up in controversy in round two as well, at the centre of a row with veteran Sorana Cirstea.
Cirstea took a problem with Osaka shouting ‘come on' between the Romanian's first and second serves.
During her on-court interview, Osaka was dismissive of Cirstea, but later apologised for being ‘disrespectful'.
Osaka's actions drew criticism from tennis legends Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport, who said that she couldn't adhere to basic etiquette by making noise during her opponent's serve.
