Mumbai: The Mumbai Traffic Police have announced temporary traffic restrictions on the Western Express Highway on February 17 due to the visit of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of France, Emmanuel Macron to the city. The restrictions will be in place to ensure smooth security arrangements for the VVIP movement and to avoid traffic congestion on one of Mumbai’s busiest roads.
According to the traffic police, movement of all Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) will be completely prohibited on both northbound and southbound lanes of the Western Express Highway between Vakola Flyover and Dahisar Toll Naka. The restriction will remain in force from 8 am to 9 pm on February 17.
Emergency services will not be affected by the curbs. Ambulances, fire brigade vehicles, police vehicles and government vehicles deployed for VVIP security arrangements will be allowed to use the highway. The traffic police have also said that vehicles permitted by them due to operational requirements will be exempted.
The notification has been issued by Ajit Borhade, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic (Western Suburbs), Mumbai, under Section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, along with relevant rules and government circulars.
Police warned that violators of the traffic restrictions will face action under the Motor Vehicles Act. The Mumbai Traffic Police have appealed to citizens to cooperate and follow traffic instructions on the day of the visit to avoid inconvenience.
Commuters, especially those using the Western Express Highway, are advised to plan their travel in advance and use alternate routes where possible.
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to arrive in Mumbai, on February 16 during his upcoming visit, where he will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 17, According to External Affairs Ministry.
Following their meeting, PM Modi and the French President will travel to New Delhi to attend the AI Impact Summit 2026.
