Amid the excitement over the opening of the fully underground Mumbai Metro-3's last stretch from Worli to Cuffe Parade or how it passes under heritage spots and the difficulties involved in it, one key question has not been addressed yet. Mumbai Metro-3's 10.99-km phase three which will soon be opened has the following stations — Science Museum, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai Central, Grant Road, Girgaon, Kalbadevi, CSMT, Hutatma Chowk, Churchgate, Vidhan Bhavan, Cuffe Parade.

The remaining functional routes have these stations — Acharya Atre Chowk (Worli), Siddhivinayak, Dadar, Shitladevi, Dharavi, BKC, Vidyanagari, Santacruz, CSIA Domestic Airport, Sahar Road, CSIA International Airport (T2), Marol Naka, MIDC, SEEPZ, Aarey.
The last phase of Mumbai Metro-3 gives last-mile connectivity to some of the key spots in the area such as Vidhan Bhavan or Hutatma Chowk, which are also among the popular taxi routes.

An X user said: “If I were to hazard a guess, it would actually increase the number of taxi/rickshaw trips taking place across the MMR region. Those specific areas mentioned will definitely see less taxi/rickshaw activity though."
While many felt that it would happen, many want taxi services to go off roads citing a number of issues. “The taxi condition is very poor. Evening time waiting time for taxi is minimum 10-15 minutes and then Mantralay signal…In the morning, three people for point is legend. Line 3 will induce a lot more travel from the outer suburbs that wasn't feasible before (sic)," the user said. Mumbai deserves better. It has slogged for too long while putting up with pathetic services from MGGM, Railways, BEST & Auto/Cab drivers, said a user. “Enough of this Auto/Taxi mafia and their crazy price gouging," felt another user. “I hope there is a point in the future where rickshaws go extinct and buses replace them as metro feeders," another said.
Mumbai has four functional Metro lines at the moment — Line 1: Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar; Line 2A: Dahisar East to DN Nagar; Line 3: Worli-BKC-Aarey; Line 7: Dahisar East to Gundavali.
“I think autos serve a useful purpose. First few months, there were no autos at the BKC metro, now it's heartening to see a couple of them queued up. Same for Aarey JVLR station. Was raining just now so was good to find autos without crossing JVLR," said an X user.
“BKC rickshaw drivers are arrogant, they extort," another said. “Before metro 2A, we used to wait and request autos now, auto walas are in queue and waiting for passengers," an X user said.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) approved shared auto taxi stands outside 28 metro stations in the suburbs (Lines 2A & 7, plus Metro 1 etc.) as a pilot project. Among the stations are Versova, D N Nagar, Andheri, Chakala, Goregaon, Aarey, Dindoshi, Akurli, Poisar, Magathane, Kandivali, Dahanukarwadi, Ovaripada, Dahisar East, Anand Nagar, Kandarpada, Malad (W), Rashtriya Udyan, Devipada, Mandpeshwar, Eksar, Borivli, Shimpoli.

Blue boards with ‘Share Auto Stand', QR code and fare information have been put up at many stations on Lines 2A and 7. Some stations already have autos waiting at these stands: Andheri (West), Aarey, Kurar, Lower Oshiwara, Jogeshwari East.
Many shared auto stands are “barely functioning", say users. Autos don't queue up, stands are empty most of the time, they complain. Commuters often find themselves stranded outside Metro stations because no shared autos are available.
Many spoke about how the Wadala-Thane Metro-4, once functional, may change the scenario for autos and taxis.
“Why not? Anyone living in Thane and South of it will take Line 4 and switch to 2B to enter BKC," said a user. “Line 4, should hopefully reduce vehicular traffic from Ghodbunder road to Thane city and reduce monopoly of these mini buses which block bus stops and don't move till they are overflowing with passengers," wrote another user.

“After metro becomes operational, need to ban autos on selected routes. Auto/ e-rickshaws should be banned, metro and electric buses are enough," said a user.
“Line 4 will be a much needed relief and will push autos off highways…Autos plying to Bhiwandi, Kalher will also be finished once Thane-Kalyan line starts," said a user on Metro line 5. “Line 4 & 4A will significantly kill the illegal bus servicees plying between Teen Haat Naka to Wadawali….," wrote one.
