The appointment of a BJP mayor in Mumbai is stalled. Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction seeks key posts, including the mayor and standing committee chairman. Shinde's corporators are reportedly gathered for a workshop. The Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena is attempting to gain support. BJP states no proposal has been received. The final decision rests with the BJP's parliamentary board.
The appointment of a BJP mayor to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation may take time as miffed deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde wants to extract his pound of flesh from BJP. Shiv Sena camp has indicated that it is in no hurry to extend support to BJP for the mayor's post till their demands are accepted.
BJP has 89 corporators and would need 29 corporators from Shiv Sena to come to power in BMC. Shinde has already kept his 29 corporators holed up in a Suburban Hotel in Mumbai which his party has claimed is a 'three-day workshop'. Guards have also been posted outside the hotel.
Under Shinde's leadership, Shiv Sena would be seeking the mayor's post as well as the crucial standing committee chairman's post for 2.5 years. The standing committee is crucial as it oversees budgets and clears crucial projects of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation.
Shinde and the Maharashtra BJP's relations, which were cold at best, has gone further south after the results of the municipal polls as the Shinde camp claims that BJP has gone out of its way to cut him down to size. "In both Navi Mumbai and Kalyan Dombivli, they have gone out of the way to try to cut us down to size. It is not just about electoral performance, their leaders (read BJP's Ganesh Naik) made personal attacks on Shinde. All this would have a factor. The negotiations will have to happen on our terms," a Shiv Sena leader said.
Meanwhile, the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena, which was voted out of power in the BMC after three decades, has decided to fish in troubled waters, claiming that Shinde's corporators were in touch with them as they don't want to support a BJP mayor.
"No one wants a BJP mayor in Mumbai, this is everyone's wish. If God wishes, then a Shiv Sena (read UBT) mayor may come in. As per our information, several Shiv Sena corporators also do not want to have a BJP mayor and are in touch with us. At the end of the day, they too are Sena corporators and share our thinking. A lot is happening behind the scenes," said Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut.
"How long can they (Shiv Sena) keep the corporators locked? They (BJP) have a majority but it's not big. History has shown us that majorities are fluid. They can shift any time anywhere," Raut said.
BJP revenue minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, however, took on Raut saying that the latter could not even keep its MLAs safe, referring to Eknath Shinde splitting Shiv Sena. He said BJP had not received any such proposal from Shiv Sena on sharing of the mayor's post and said that the final decision would be decided by BJP's parliamentary board.
