Railways are the heartline of Mumbai and are used by lakhs of commuters every single day, remaining the primary mode of travel across the city. From office-goers and students to small business owners, the suburban railway network keeps Mumbai moving. Now, in a move aimed at easing daily travel and reducing peak-hour stress, Central Railway has introduced a key operational change focused on improving the punctuality of local train services.
As per the new directive, long-distance express trains will no longer be allowed to enter suburban railway corridors during peak hours. Railway officials said the decision has been taken to ensure that local trains operate on time without interruptions caused by the movement of express services on the same tracks.

Earlier, express and suburban trains often shared tracks during rush hours, leading to congestion and frequent delays. This overlap would slow down local trains, triggering overcrowding on platforms and inside coaches. With the revised system, Central Railway expects smoother movement of local services, especially during the busy morning and evening commute.
Under the new arrangement, long-distance express trains will be regulated at designated outer stations such as Titwala and Asangaon during peak hours. These stations will act as holding points, preventing express services from entering heavily crowded suburban stretches until peak traffic reduces.
Railway officials said this step is part of a broader effort to streamline operations and improve reliability for daily commuters. By prioritising local train movement during rush hours, the railways aim to cut down delays, manage crowding better and offer a more predictable travel experience.
For Mumbai's vast working population, which relies heavily on local trains to reach offices, colleges and markets, the change is expected to bring noticeable relief. Commuters could see shorter waiting times, fewer unscheduled halts and improved punctuality during peak hours.

The decision also comes amid ongoing complaints from Western Railway commuters. On Wednesday morning, several local services were delayed, causing packed platforms and overcrowded trains. Passengers reported delays ranging from 10 to nearly 50 minutes, leading to missed connections and late arrivals. Several outraged commuters took to X and tweeted their frustration. Commuters in the Central Railway line have constantly been affected by delays in local trains.
