MP Engineer Asad Khan Changes Name To ‘Atharv Tyagi’, Performs ‘Shuddhi’ After Being Denied Entry Into Mahakal Temple
A 26-year-old engineer from Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, converted to Hinduism after repeatedly being denied entry into temples because of his Muslim identity. The man formalised the decision on Monday through a traditional Vedic ceremony in Kashi.
According to Dainik Bhaskar, Asad Khan, now known as Atharv Tyagi, returned to Sanatan Dharma after purification rituals were performed by 21 Brahmins on a boat in the Ganga river in Kashi. The ceremony included a Panchagavya bath, hair shaving, tilak application, Ganesh puja, recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and a Havan, following which he formally adopted his new Hindu name.
A video, now being circulated all over the Internet, shows the man performing rituals with several priests around him as he converted to Hinduism.
Speaking about what led him to take this step, Atharv, in an affidavit, said a painful experience at Ujjain's Mahakal temple became the turning point in his life. He shared, “Since childhood, I loved visiting temples and performing worship."
As the man grew older, he said his name and identity often became obstacles. In his words, “I faced difficulties many times while entering temples and during worship. I am a devotee of Bajrang Bali. I took this decision to live according to my faith."
Atharv added, “We were not allowed to enter the Mahakal temple. That experience made me decide to follow my own path."
According to the report, Atharv is an M Tech graduate and works as an engineer. He belongs to a family in Sagar district, where his parents, brother and sister continue to follow Islam. Despite this, he said his spiritual inclination towards Hinduism began at a very young age.
The report further noted that Atharv has submitted an affidavit on a Rs 20 stamp paper, clearly stating that his return to Sanatan Dharma was made by his own will. In the affidavit, he reiterated, “I am returning to Sanatan Dharma by my own will."
Atharv also confirmed that he has decided to leave his family home and live independently going forward. The Varanasi ceremony, conducted entirely according to Vedic traditions, marked what he described as a personal decision to live openly according to the faith he has followed in spirit since childhood.
