Thyroid Eye Disease occurs due to an autoimmune process in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the structures around the eyes. This leads to changes in the appearance of the eyes and affects the muscles that control eye movement. Surprisingly, the signs in the eyes can sometimes appear before a thyroid imbalance is even detected. For many patients, troubling visual or cosmetic changes first lead them to an eye doctor, who then uncovers the underlying thyroid problem.
This is why proactive, regular eye care is so important. If you've been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder especially hyperthyroidism, you should consult both an endocrinologist and an ophthalmologist.
