More Than A Thyroid Problem: Understanding Its Impact On Eye Health
When we think of thyroid problems, we usually associate them with symptoms like weight changes, fatigue, or heart palpitations. However, what many don't realize is that the eyes are frequently affected, especially in cases of hyperthyroidism. This specific eye condition, known as Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), is more than just a minor complication, it's a potentially sight-threatening issue that requires dedicated attention and must be treated by an ophthalmologist or an oculoplastic surgeon (eyelid specialist).
Dr Akshay G Nair, Oculoplasty and Ocular Oncology Specialist, Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital shares all you need to know:
Thyroid Eye Disease occurs due to an autoimmune process in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the structures around the eyes. This leads to changes in the appearance of the eyes and affects the muscles that control eye movement. Surprisingly, the signs in the eyes can sometimes appear before a thyroid imbalance is even detected. For many patients, troubling visual or cosmetic changes first lead them to an eye doctor, who then uncovers the underlying thyroid problem.
This is why proactive, regular eye care is so important. If you've been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder especially hyperthyroidism, you should consult both an endocrinologist and an ophthalmologist. An eye specialist, ideally one trained in oculoplastic surgery, can watch for early signs of thyroid-related eye disease and guide timely treatment, helping protect your vision and overall eye comfort.
Eye symptoms to look out for:
Persistent gritty, dry, or watery sensation
Redness and visible swelling in the eyelids and surrounding tissues
Sudden appearance of under-eye bags or puffiness
Bulging or a “staring" appearance of the eyes—often noticed first by others
Pressure or pain behind the eyes, especially during movement
Difficulty fully closing the eyes

Recognizing these symptoms early and consulting an eyelid specialist can ensure your vision remains protected, making eye health an essential part of managing thyroid disorders.
