Mojtaba Khamenei Breaks Nowruz Tradition With No Public Address, Raises Questions For CIA, Mossad
Global intelligence agencies, including the CIA and Mossad, were closely watching during Nowruz on Friday to see whether Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, would uphold his father’s tradition of a New Year’s address.
However, the holiday went by without Mojtaba’s address, and the mystery around his health and whereabouts deepened.
Since the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Mojtaba has managed to remain behind the curtains. While Israel has vowed that the Iranian leader remains at the top of its target list, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed Mojtaba was “wounded and likely disfigured" in the strike.
Intelligence Suggests Mojtaba Is Alive
The U.S. and Israel intelligence suggests Mojtaba remains alive, with evidence of Iranian officials trying to schedule in-person meetings with him, Axios reports.
According to the report, Trump’s national security team is still working to assess who is actually in charge of the regime in Tehran.
“We have no evidence that he is really the one giving orders," a senior Israeli official told Axios.
Another US official told the outlet that the possibility of Mojtaba taking the helm remains under shadow.
“It’s beyond weird. We don’t think the Iranians would have gone through all this trouble to choose a dead guy as the supreme leader, but at the same time, we have no proof that he is taking the helm," he said.
Mojtaba As Iran’s Supreme Leader
Mojtaba Khamenei was declared Iran’s Supreme Leader on March 9, days after his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed in the coordinated US-Israeli strikes on February 28.
Three days later, his public response came through a written statement on Telegram, which fueled speculations around his health and his role in navigating the country through the crisis.
US President Donald Trump said his administration was having a “hard time" communicating with the Iranian regime as, he claimed, there was “nobody to talk to".
“Their leaders are all gone. The next set of leaders are all gone. And the next set of leaders are mostly gone. And now, nobody wants to be leader over there anymore. We are having a hard time. We want to talk to them but there is nobody to talk to. You know what, we like it that way," Trump said.
