New Delhi: Good news for crores of gas consumers in India as New Year 2026 set to bring major relief. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has announced a reduction in tariffs, which will lead to a cut of Rs 2 to Rs 3 per unit in the prices of CNG and domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) from January 1, 2026. Talking about the development, PNGRB member A.K. Tiwari said that the new tariff structure will directly benefit the transport sector and household kitchen budgets.
A.K. Tiwari explained that the main reason for this relief is a change in the gas distribution “tariff structure.” To recall, the gas prices earlier depended on three different distance-based zones (200 km, 1,200 km, and beyond). This has now been reduced to just two zones. Under the new system, the rate for Zone-1 has been rationalised and fixed at Rs 54, whereas it earlier went up to Rs 80 and even Rs 107.
Experts are of the opinion that through this price reduction, the Modi government plans to promote the use of natural gas across the country. To achieve this, discussions are being held with state governments to reduce VAT and speed up infrastructure expansion.
It is important to note that at present, public and private sector companies together are expanding the gas network nationwide. It is expected that cheaper prices and easier availability will lead to a significant rise in the use of clean energy in the coming years.
