Missed Glaucoma Eye Check-Ups In 2025 Cost Thousands Their Vision In India
Grievously, many individuals lose their precious, irreplaceable vision simply because they overlook their eye health and skip routine glaucoma screenings. These check-ups should be at the top of everyone's priority list, given the gravity of the condition and the host of issues it can give rise to. Often referred to as the “silent assassin," glaucoma creeps in quietly, damaging the optic nerve without any obvious warning signs.
This problem has been exacerbated by our post-pandemic rush, tight budgets, and the general neglect often associated with eye health. Too frequently, glaucoma hides in plain sight during its early stages, mimicking minor side-vision blurriness that people dismiss as fatigue or ageing. All the while, pressure builds inside the eye, slowly damaging precious nerve fibres.
Dr. Indeevar V. Mishra, Medical Director and Proprietor, Bhalanetra Super Speciality Eye Hospital, shares all you need to know.
Numbers Do the Talking
India carries a heavy burden of glaucoma cases, with approximately 11 to 12 million people affected, primarily among those aged 40 and older. Glaucoma accounts for nearly 12.8% of all blindness in the country, making it the third leading cause after cataracts and refractive errors.
Studies show prevalence rates ranging between 2.7% and 4.3% among adults over 40, roughly 1 in every 40 people. Reports from the All India Ophthalmological Society highlight a concerning 25% drop in routine eye check-ups since 2020. According to the World Health Organization, glaucoma blinds 1 in 40 Indians over the age of 40, and alarmingly, nearly 90% of cases remain undetected until it is too late.
People with diabetes and high blood pressure, along with India's rapidly ageing population, are further fuelling this glaucoma crisis. Women who have gone through menopause and individuals with severe myopia are particularly vulnerable. This underscores the growing need for periodic screenings that can detect the condition early, when intervention is most effective.
Glaucoma and the Dangers It Presents
Glaucoma is not a single disease but a group of conditions in which eye pressure rises and gradually destroys optic nerve cells. It can be likened to a dam malfunction, fluid fails to drain properly from the eye, leading to pressure buildup that crushes vital nerve fibres from behind.
In the early stages, there is no pain and no obvious blurring of vision. Instead, peripheral vision slowly narrows, much like blinders on a horse, often unnoticed until daily navigation becomes difficult. As the disease progresses, central vision may deteriorate, causing individuals to bump into furniture or miss familiar faces in crowds.
What is most concerning is that many people feel nothing until nearly half their vision has already been lost. In advanced or acute cases, symptoms such as hazy halos around lights, sudden sharp eye pain, or persistent headaches may appear.
Importance of Adopting Preventive Measures
Due to underdiagnosis and lack of awareness, an estimated 70–90% of glaucoma cases go undetected until advanced stages. Only about 20% of affected individuals are aware that they have the condition.
As part of preventive eye care, individuals should ensure that family members undergo regular comprehensive eye examinations. Annual dilated eye exams for parents and grandparents, simple 20-minute visits can measure intraocular pressure, assess optic nerve health, and map visual fields, significantly reducing the risk of irreversible vision loss.

As we look ahead to 2026, committing to regular glaucoma eye check-ups and maintaining strong vision health should be a key New Year's resolution. Individuals should ensure that elderly family members especially those over the age of 40 undergo routine comprehensive eye examinations, as the risk of glaucoma increases with age and early stages often present no symptoms.
Given the gravity of the condition and the risks it poses, eye screenings should be treated as non-negotiable much like gym routines or tax filings. Prioritising periodic eye check-ups can lead to early detection and timely medical intervention, which can not only save vision but also significantly improve overall quality of life.
