South Africa secured a commanding 76-run victory over India in their Super Eights opener. India's batting collapsed under pressure, losing wickets at regular intervals. South Africa's bowlers executed their plans effectively, restricting India to 111 all out. This defeat places significant pressure on India for their upcoming matches against Zimbabwe and West Indies.

Aiden Markram, South Africa’s captain, called correctly at the toss, and a few eyebrows were raised when he chose to bat. Quinton de Kock was cramped for room, worked over and bowled by a beauty from Jasprit Bumrah that trimmed the leg bail. Markram miscued, with the ball sticking in the pitch, and only found the mid-off fielder. Ryan Rickleton got a peach from Bumrah, a slower ball well disguised and perfectly pitched.
At 20 for 3 after four overs, South Africa were in tatters, the decision to bat first looking worse with every passing minute. But all those who believed that three wickets first up was a bonus for India had to contend with those who wanted four, so that the South African lower order was exposed.
India had South Africa exactly where they wanted them, and from here on, what was needed was the pressure staying on. Instead, South Africa decided to take on Varun Chakravarthy. Dewald Brevis and David Miller both decided to back a simple method. Neither appeared to pick the mystery spinner, but did not allow that to worry them.

The pair used the width of the crease to make it difficult for Varun to attack the stumps. With this fulcrum of his bowling disturbed, Varun’s accuracy became a liability, and Miller took calculated risks. The long ball was very much in play, and before they had clocked it, India had ceded the advantage, and the pressure was back on them.
Brevis and Miller put on 67 together before Shivam Dube struck, inducing the error. By then, though, Brevis had 45 from only 29 balls. Miller was the next to go, but his 63 had come off only 35 balls.
South Africa had punched and counter-punched their way to 187 for 7. In the course of their innings, South Africa had also seen the pitch get better and better. The ball was now coming onto the bat, and this should, in theory, have made things easier for India.
But if the batsmen had shown the ability to adapt quickly, their bowlers went one better. Markram took the new ball, presumably in an attempt to target Abhishek Sharma, but in the bargain snaffled Ishan Kishan. Tilak Varma came down the pitch and swished, only to nick off, and Abhishek, despite playing a couple of pleasing shots, was unable to latch onto one from Marco Jansen and skied the ball to the on side. Corbyn Bosch covered good ground and took a stunning catch, made even better by the fact that Keshav Maharaj also trying to make ground and crashed into Bosch.
India were 26 for 3, just marginally worse off than South Africa were. But, where India took the foot off the pedal, South Africa tightened their tactics and sharpened execution. The ground fielding was attacking, keeping the pressure on and cutting the angles. The bowlers stuck to their plans and Markram was having a golden day with bowling changes.
India quickly lost their fourth, and that ensured that no meaningful partnerships developed. The game as a contest was not yet over because of the depth in the Indian line-up. And yet, it became painfully clear that none of these batsmen would be allowed to play their natural game, or even freely enough to make a dent.
The wickets came at regular intervals, ensuring that batsmen fresh to the crease had to take a moment to acclimatise, knowing fully well that even doing so was making it that much more difficult for those still to come. When none of these attempts resulted in a partnership, with no stability in the innings, the most feared team in the tournament was forced to limp to 111 all out and a defeat by 76 runs.
The back end of the innings made for painful viewing, with Dube trying to hold onto hope, looking for some purpose to keep attempting the big hits while shielding the tail. Dube made 42, but it was not an innings that would have brought him any joy.
India began their Super Eights campaign with a chastening defeat. All is not lost, with Zimbabwe and West Indies still to come. And yet, just as every wicket brought to bear a pressure that almost choked individuals and the team, the pressure is now well and truly on. India cannot afford to have another bad day on the field, either collectively or even in one department, if they are to go all the way in this tournament.
