Mirabai Chanu On Silver Medal At World Championships: 'Gives Me Great Confidence For...'
Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu (48kg) secured a silver medal at the World Championships in the 48kg category, continuing her impressive record at this prestigious event, where she has previously been on the podium twice.
The 2017 world champion and 2022 silver medallist achieved a total lift of 199kg (84kg in snatch + 115kg in clean and jerk), finishing among the medal winners after moving down from the 49kg division.
Chanu faced challenges in the snatch, failing twice at 87kg, but regained her form in the clean and jerk, completing all three attempts successfully.
A former world record holder in clean and jerk, Chanu lifted 109kg, 112kg, and 115kg with ease.
The last time she lifted 115kg was at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where she also won a silver medal.
“I'm happy to finish on the podium at the IWF World Championships 2025 in Norway – it gives me great confidence for the year ahead, especially after my previous performance at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in earlier in August. Every competition is part of my preparation towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and the upcoming Commonwealth Games and Asian Games will be crucial milestones on that journey. I'm focused on working hard, learning from each outing, and giving my best for the country," Saikhom Mirabai Chanu said on her triumph.
Chief coach Vijay Sharma had earlier stated that the goal for these World Championships was to surpass the 200kg mark and to start lifting weights that Chanu had managed in the 49kg category.
“Mirabai's podium at the IWF World Championships 2025 in Norway is a reflection of her consistency and commitment. This is just the start of a very important phase in her career, with the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games next year serving as key tests before the LA Olympics. The focus now is on fine-tuning her technique, building strength, and ensuring she peaks at the right time," coach Vijay said after the silver medal on Friday.
North Korea's Ri Song Gum claimed the gold with a remarkable 213kg effort (91kg + 122kg), setting new world records in total as well as clean and jerk with her final two lifts of 120kg and 122kg.
Thailand's Thanyathon Sukcharoen took the bronze with a total of 198kg (88kg + 110kg).
