Meta AI Will Now Alert Parents If Teens Talk About Suicide Or Self-Harm
Meta has announced a new safety feature: if a teen brings up suicide or self-harm while chatting with Meta AI, parents will now get notified. The company shared the update in a blog post on Thursday, calling it an expansion of the parental tools it already offers.
This isn’t a standalone feature; it adds to the parental supervision system Meta has already rolled out, which lets parents keep an eye on how their teen uses Meta AI. For now, only parents who have Instagram’s supervision controls turned on will get these alerts, though Meta plans to bring the same alerts to its other apps over time.
“We worked with parents and experts to understand which AI conversations warrant an alert — such as those where a teen makes a clear reference to hurting themselves, even if that reference is subtle," Meta said.
Who Gets This First
The rollout starts with parents in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Meta says the feature will be available globally by the end of the year.
Meta AI already points teens toward crisis helplines and nudges them to talk to a trusted adult when suicide or self-harm comes up. What’s new is that a parent will now be told about the conversation too. Every flagged chat goes through a human review first — an AI system spots the conversation, but a person checks it before any alert is sent out. Meta says it’s choosing to be cautious for now.
“We understand how distressing these alerts may be for a parent to receive," Meta said. “That’s why, as we continue to improve our detection, all chats flagged by our AI will be manually reviewed before an alert is sent."
The company also admitted the system isn’t perfect at reading intent. “If a teen’s intent is ambiguous, we’ll err on the side of caution and alert the parent," Meta said, acknowledging that this could sometimes trigger an alert even when there’s no real danger.
Alongside the alert itself, parents will get expert-written tips on how to talk to their teen about self-harm and suicide. The notification arrives through the app, plus a separate email, text or WhatsApp message, depending on what contact details the parent has on file.
This latest move builds on other safety steps Meta has introduced recently. Parents can already get notified if their teen repeatedly searches for suicide or self-harm content on Instagram, and they can see the general topics their teen has discussed with Meta AI over the past week, though not the full conversation itself.
Meta is also extending its “Limited Content" mode, which currently gives teens a more restricted Instagram experience, to Meta AI as well. The chatbot already steers clear of sexual, romantic or alcohol-related conversations with teens, and this update will widen the list of prompts it declines to engage with.
Looking further ahead, Meta says it’s developing the ability to alert emergency services directly if a conversation with Meta AI (from a teen or an adult) suggests someone is at immediate risk of suicide. Meta already does something similar for concerning posts on Facebook and Instagram, and wants to bring that same safeguard to AI conversations.
