Meerut To Prayagraj In Just 7 Hours! Ganga Expressway Nears Opening | Check Route
The historic city of Meerut, often described as the land of revolution due to its significant role in India’s First War of Independence in 1857, is rapidly advancing with modern infrastructure and technology. Over the past few years, the city has witnessed remarkable development in transport and connectivity, transforming it into a major hub in western Uttar Pradesh. While the full stretch of the Namo Bharat Corridor is now operational, allowing passengers to travel from Modipuram and Begumpul to Delhi’s Sarai Kale Khan at speeds of up to 160 kilometres per hour, Metro services have also commenced within Meerut, easing daily commuting for thousands of residents.
Adding to this transformation, the much-awaited Ganga Expressway is set to begin from the city soon. The Local18 team recently visited the Ganga Expressway site to assess the progress and understand how this mega project will reshape regional connectivity.
According to officials at the site, nearly 95% of the construction work has already been completed. The Ganga Expressway is a six-lane highway stretching 594 kilometres, making it one of the longest expressways in the country. Once operational, it will significantly reduce travel time between Meerut and Prayagraj, while also improving freight movement and interstate connectivity.
At present, travelling by car from Meerut to Prayagraj takes around 12 hours, depending on traffic conditions. After the expressway opens, the journey will be reduced to just seven hours, saving nearly five hours of travel time. This reduction is expected to lower fuel consumption and make long-distance travel more convenient for families, businesspersons and transport operators alike.
The expressway will commence in Bijoli, Meerut, and pass through 12 districts before culminating in Prayagraj. These districts include Meerut, Bulandshahr, Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Unnao, Raebareli, Pratapgarh and Prayagraj.
In addition to improving connectivity between major cities, the project will also benefit rural regions. As many as 518 villages across these districts will be linked to the main route, ensuring high-speed access for rural populations. This is expected to boost agricultural trade, small businesses and local employment opportunities along the corridor.
Although construction is largely complete, technical testing is currently underway to ensure smooth operations once the expressway is officially inaugurated and opened to the public. Authorities are carrying out comprehensive checks, including toll system trials, safety inspections and road quality assessments, to prevent inconvenience to travellers after launch.
At present, entry and exit routes from Bijoli in Meerut have been temporarily closed to facilitate these final-stage tests and technical preparations.
The Ganga Expressway is being regarded as a historic development for Meerut. With high-speed road connectivity, operational metro services and rapid rail access via the Namo Bharat Corridor, residents are set to benefit from modern infrastructure across sectors.
Experts believe that improved connectivity will attract new industries, logistics hubs and real estate projects to the region. Property values along the corridor are also expected to rise once the expressway becomes fully functional. Overall, the project is anticipated to make travel faster, safer and far more convenient for thousands of passengers, while accelerating economic growth across western and central Uttar Pradesh.
