Domestic equity markets staged a sharp recovery from intraday lows on Thursday to reclaim the green territory, supported by value buying at lower levels and strength in the rupee. The BSE Sensex closed the session with a gain of 185.23 points or 0.25% to trade at 73,319.55, while the NSE Nifty ended the day higher by 33.70 points or 0.15 per cent, to trade at 22,531.60.
After opening sharply negative, both the BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty clawed back all its losses.
As of 1:45 pm, the BSE Sensex was down 452 points, or 0.62 per cent, at 72,665.81, while the NSE Nifty slipped 150 points, or 0.67 per cent, to 22,531.60. The recovery comes after a steep fall in early trade when panic selling gripped the markets. In the morning trade, the BSE benchmark had hit the day’s low of 71,545.81.
The sell-off was triggered after US President Donald Trump said the United States would continue the war in Iran over the coming weeks, dampening global risk sentiment.
In the opening trade, the Sensex had plunged 1,411 points, or 1.92 per cent, to 71,716.82, while the Nifty dropped 445 points, or 1.98 per cent, slipping below the 22,250 mark to 22,210.67. Later, the BSE benchmark hit the day’s low of 71,545.81.
Though the benchmark Nifty managed to turn marginally positive, the broader market closed in the red. Midcap and smallcap indices remained in the red, with Nifty Midcap 100 down 0.26 per cent and Nifty Smallcap 100 falling 0.38 per cent, pointing to persistent risk aversion beyond frontline stocks.
The standout support came from the IT pack, with the Nifty IT index surging 2.6 per cent, emerging as the top sectoral gainer. Gains in IT and telecom-linked mid-small indices further reinforced the defensive tilt in the market.
In contrast, IT stocks provided some support to the market, with the Nifty IT index rising over 2 per cent, emerging as a key outperformer in an otherwise weak session.
On the flip side, several domestic-facing and rate-sensitive sectors remained under pressure. Auto, pharma, consumer durables, and oil & gas indices all traded lower, reflecting caution around demand outlook and input cost risks.
PSU banks also remained weak despite some recovery, indicating selective participation even within financials.
India VIX rose over 2 per cent, highlighting continued nervousness among investors amid geopolitical uncertainty and global market swings.
Markets are likely to remain sensitive to global cues, particularly developments around the Iran conflict and their potential impact on crude oil prices and inflation.
After Trump’s speech, Brent crude oil spiked around 5% to $105 and the US 10-year bond yield again firmed up to 4.36 per cent negatively impacting gold and silver prices.
In a nationally televised address, Trump said Washington will strike Iran “extremely hard" over the next two to three weeks. Following this, oil prices surged by over 4% to trade at nearly $105 per barrel.
“We are going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We are going to bring them back to the Stone Ages, where they belong," the US President said.
The Indian rupee saw a significant strength on Thursday, rising 1.98 per cent from the previous close, which is the biggest single-day jump in 12 years, after fresh steps by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) aimed at curbing speculative activity boosted sentiment in the currency market.
The rupee climbed to 92.82 against the US dollar, gaining 188 paise compared with its previous close of 94.70 on Monday, as traders anticipated increased dollar supply in the onshore market following the unwinding of speculative positions.
