Marco Rubio Calls US-Ukraine Peace Talks ‘Productive’ As Kyiv Seeks Security Guarantees
Talks between the United States and Ukraine aimed at securing a deal to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war have been termed as “productive", though officials admit substantial work lies ahead. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the assessment after hosting a Ukrainian delegation in Florida, where discussions focused on a revised peace framework and Ukraine's long-term security needs.
The meeting, held in Hallandale Beach, brought together national security council secretary Rustem Umerov, Ukraine's newly appointed chief negotiator, alongside President Donald Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and the former president's son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Witkoff is expected to travel to Moscow next week for further talks.
Umerov has stepped into the role following the resignation of former chief negotiator Andriy Yermak, who quit after an anti-corruption raid on his home. His appointment marks a significant shift as Kyiv attempts to regain control over the negotiation process.
Sunday's talks follow two weeks of intense diplomacy triggered by the leak of a 28-point US peace plan which alarmed Ukraine and several European allies for appearing overly favourable to Russia. The controversy pushed Washington to reaffirm that any agreement must safeguard Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Rubio underscored this commitment, telling the Ukrainian delegation that peace must not only end the fighting but also “set up Ukraine for long-term prosperity". He acknowledged progress but stressed the need for continued discussions.
Before the meeting, Umerov outlined Kyiv's priorities: security guarantees, preventing future aggression, economic stability and post-war reconstruction. He said the United States was “hearing us, supporting us, working beside us".
After the talks, he described the session as “productive and successful", a sentiment echoed by Rubio.
President Trump, speaking separately aboard Air Force One, said negotiations were “going along well" and expressed optimism about the possibility of a deal. He confirmed that Witkoff and possibly Kushner would soon travel to Moscow to discuss the reworked plan with President Vladimir Putin.
One major stumbling block persists – the fate of Ukrainian territories seized or annexed by Russia since 2014. A source close to the Ukrainian delegation told AFP that discussions were “not easy", though all sides remained focused on finding a solution.

President Volodymyr Zelensky later said it was vital for the talks to continue in a “constructive dynamic" while prioritising Ukraine's national interests. He expressed gratitude for Washington's efforts, even as Kyiv braces for difficult negotiations ahead.
Zelensky is due in Paris today for discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron, another key ally. The war, now nearing its fourth year, has caused tens of thousands of casualties and displaced millions, underscoring the urgency of securing a credible path to peace.
