Marc Benioff wants Trump to send troops to San Francisco

Salesforce founder and CEO Marc Benioff, long regarded as one of San Francisco's most generous and liberal-leaning business figures, expressed strong support for President Donald Trump and endorsed deploying National Guard troops to the city to address crime.
In a recent interview, Benioff said he “fully supports the president” and believes Trump is “doing a great job.” He also backed Trump's idea of sending federal troops to San Francisco, saying the city lacks sufficient police officers. “We don't have enough cops, so if they can be cops, I'm all for it,” Benioff said.
Benioff's comments mark a notable political shift for the billionaire philanthropist, who previously supported Democratic candidates and causes. In 2016, he hosted a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton, and in 2018, he funded a San Francisco ballot measure to tax corporations for homeless services.
Now, Benioff says the city needs to “re-fund” the police. Speaking ahead of Salesforce's annual Dreamforce conference, which brings about 50,000 visitors to downtown San Francisco, he lamented having to hire hundreds of off-duty officers for event security. San Francisco's police department currently has about 1,500 officers, far below staffing goals.
City leaders quickly pushed back. Assembly member Matt Haney called Benioff's stance “a direct assault and occupation of our city.” District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said she would prosecute any federal agents who act violently, calling the suggestion of sending troops “an invitation to chaos.” Board of Supervisors President Rafael Mandelman said while San Francisco needs more police, “Trump is not the answer.”
Benioff's remarks come as Trump, in his second term, has floated sending federal forces into several Democratic-led cities, accusing them of being mismanaged. San Francisco, while seeing lower violent crime than many major cities, continues to struggle with drug use and property crime.
Despite political controversy, Benioff continues his philanthropy, recently donating $100 million to UCSF Children's Hospitals and $39 million through Salesforce for schools and children's causes. Over the past 26 years, he and his company have given more than $1 billion to Bay Area initiatives.
Benioff said he has “never been progressive,” describing himself as a longtime Republican turned independent.
