Marathi vs Hindi Row Hits Varanasi: Local Films Maharashtra Tourists Eating, Tells Them 'Mumbai Mein UP Walon Ko...' | Video
From the past few months, the Marathi-Hindi language debate has remained in public discussion with frequent political statements, protests and viral videos. Amid this backdrop, a new clip from Varanasi has surfaced online which involves tourists from Maharashtra.
The clip was shared on Instagram by Avish Srivastava. In the video, they were enjoying street food when Avish approached them with his camera on and initiated a conversation around the language controversy.
Man Confronts Maharashtra Tourists About Maraathi Language Row In Varanasi
In the video, Avish is heard addressing the group and asking, “Main aap sabse ek chiz puchna chahta hu. Aap log Banaras aaye ho ghumne. Aap sab log Maharashtra se ho? (I want to ask you all one thing. You've come to Banaras to travel. Are all of you from Maharashtra?)"
After the men confirm, he follows up by raising allegations linked to the language row, saying, “Maharashtra mein mai dekhra hu ki Uttar Pradesh ke log waha pe, Hindi ya apni local bhasha mein baat karte hai toh unko force kiya jata hai, mara jata hai, peeta jata hai (In Maharashtra, I see that when people from Uttar Pradesh speak Hindi or their local language, they are forced, beaten and assaulted)."
The group responds by rejecting the claim with one of them clearly stating, “Aisa nahi hai (This is not the case)."
Avish insists again, saying, “Aisa hai. Maine bahut viral videos dekhe hai (It does happen. I have seen many viral videos)"
Tourists Push Back, Call It ‘Content Culture'
One of the men from the group then counters the claim by pointing to social media behaviour, saying, “Log content ke liye karte hai ye sab taki viral ho jaye. Aisa real mein nahi hai (People do all this for content so that it goes viral. This doesn't happen in real life)."
Avish later asks them about their experience in Banaras, “Aapko Banaras aa kar kaisa laga? Aapke sath kaise behave kara? (How did you feel after coming to Banaras? How were you treated here?)"
The men respond by saying they are enjoying their stay. But Avish adds another claim towards the end, stating, “Humare logo ke sath bahut hua jo bhi humare jaanne wale hai. Thane mein report hai sab logo ki (A lot has happened with people we know. Many have filed reports in in police stations)."

Online Anger Over Privacy
As the video spread, many users focused less on the language issue and more on the act of filming strangers without consent.
One X user commented, “4 Marathi tourists who came for pilgrimage were eating peacefully in Varanasi. A local guy came, took out his camera and started filming them and confronting them. 0 Civic Sense. 0 Regards for their privacy. 0 Manners."
Another added, “Some random blogger in Varanasi started filming and confronting tourists, who had come from Maharashtra, over language issue and assault on North Indians. Are these men responsible for what is happening in Maharashtra? Why is common sense such a rare commodity these days."
“What is the point of randomly filming and invading the privacy of random tourists just because they are from Maharashtra?" someone else questioned.
A person asked, “What's the point of filming someone and invading their privacy if a tourist is simply enjoying their meal, showing no attitude, and even speaking Hindi properly?"
“An eye for an eye can blind the whole world!" read another comment.
While criticism dominated, some users defended the confrontation with an individual writing, “That's not a lack of civic sense but the reaction to the action of a few Marathis who force the people from UP and Bihar to speak their language!"
What Is Happening In Maharashtra Over Marathi Language Issue
The video has resurfaced discussions around the ongoing Marathi language row in Maharashtra where workers from parties such as the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena (UBT) have demanded the mandatory use of Marathi in public life and business spaces. Several incidents involving verbal threats, physical assaults and public intimidation have been reported many of which have gone viral.
In recent months, videos have shown MNS workers confronting shopkeepers, auto drivers and bank employees for not speaking Marathi. In one Mumbai incident, a medical shop employee was beaten and forced to apologise publicly over a WhatsApp status perceived as disrespectful to the Marathi language. In another case from Pune, a bank manager was slapped during office hours for addressing customers in Hindi.
