Manchester City Splurge 100 Million Euros To Sign...
Got Question about the News?
Manchester City have signed teenage Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille on a five-year deal. The Ligue 1 club says the deal is worth 100 million euros (USD 117 million).
“Manchester City are, for me, the best Club in the world," Bouaddi said in a statement on Wednesday. “It’s a dream to be here and be able to call myself a City player. I have spent most of my life working hard to become the best player I can be and reach the top of the game."
“I’ve watched City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always try and play quality football, and they have shown they are winners – this Club feels like it’s built to win. The squad is world-class and Enzo is a top manager. And I’m really looking forward to playing at the Etihad Stadium, in front of all the fans.
“I have plenty of improving to do. I am only 18. I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much. This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that. This Club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title," he added.
Bouaddi is a highly rated midfielder who represented France in age-group competitions before switching to Morocco and recently featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He made his debut for Ligue 1 club Lille just three days after celebrating his 16th birthday and quickly established himself as a regular.
Manchester City’s Director of Football Hugo Viana is confident Ayyoub will thrive at the club.
“Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high – a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs. At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo," Viana said.
“We have watched him very, very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City. We are really happy he has joined us and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfil his potential," he added.
Manchester City recently sold Rodri to Barcelona and Tijjani Reijnders to Al-Qadsiah, with Nico Gonzalez expected to leave the club.
Ayyoub Bouaddi is expected to be a much-needed addition to Manchester City's midfield, especially after the sales of Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders, and with Nico Gonzalez also expected to leave.
The transfer of Ayyoub Bouaddi to Manchester City will break Lille's transfer record, previously held by Nicolas Pépé's sale for 80 million euros in 2019.
Ayyoub Bouaddi could become a key player for Morocco, having been described as a "next superstar" by some supporters and compared to legendary midfielders. He was a much-needed addition to the Morocco squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he impressed against Brazil's experienced midfield, dominated the centre of midfield against Scotland, and became the second-youngest player to feature in a FIFA World Cup quarter-final.
