Man ‘Upgrades’ Life With Bionic Arm: What Is It? How Is This Technology Changing Prosthetics?
A video of a man showing how he has “upgraded" his life with the help of a bionic arm is going viral on social media. The arm functions by receiving signals from the person’s brain.
Candy (bionicbeast_x) posted a video where he can be seen picking up a water bottle and a bag with the robotic bionic arm.
“People think that I have only one hand but it is wrong. This is my second hand, my robotic bionic arm, which costs Rs 60-70 lakh," he says in the reel.
A post shared by Candy (@bionicbeast_x)
The man explains that the device works by reading signals sent by his brain.
“My brain signals go to my muscles through my nerves due to which my muscles get triggered and there are electrodes fitted inside it. When my muscles get triggered, then those electrodes function, and it picks up the signal, and it works," he said.
Candy noted that the device sometimes feels very heavy and weighs 2.5-3 kg.
He concluded by saying that while his sensation of touch is nil, the arm helps him in his daily activities.
What Is A Bionic Arm?
Designed to restore mobility and independence, a bionic arm is a high-tech prosthetic limb used by people who have lost an arm through accidents, medical complications or birth-related conditions.
Far more advanced than traditional prostheses, the device uses integrated electronics and sensors to interpret muscle signals from the user. These signals activate small motors within the arm, enabling controlled movements that mimic those of a natural limb.
As a result, users are able to perform routine activities, from picking up objects and writing to handling everyday devices, with improved precision and comfort.
How Does It Work?
Bionic arms operate by interpreting electrical signals generated by the user’s muscles. When a person thinks about moving their hand, the muscles that remain in the upper arm naturally activate, producing small electrical impulses. Sensors embedded within the prosthetic limb, known as electromyography (EMG) sensors, detect these signals and transmit them to the device’s internal system.
The arm’s motors then respond by moving different joints, including the fingers, wrist and elbow. In effect, the user is able to control the prosthetic through intentional muscle movement.
Most modern bionic arms are powered by rechargeable batteries and are designed to remain lightweight so they can be worn comfortably throughout the day. As the technology evolves, developers continue working to enhance both independence and ease of use for those who rely on these devices.
Bionic Vs Traditional Prosthetics: Which Is Better?
Conventional prosthetic arms are largely mechanical and powered by the user’s own body movements. They can assist with simple activities but lack motorised components that allow more sophisticated motion.
Bionic arms, by contrast, use electronic systems and sensors to detect muscle signals, enabling movements that more closely resemble those of a natural limb. Many are able to reproduce various grip styles and may even provide limited sensory feedback.
Cost and maintenance also separate the two technologies. Bionic prosthetics are considerably more expensive and require regular charging, battery replacements and periodic servicing, including software updates. Traditional prosthetic arms are typically far cheaper and easier to maintain.
Their capabilities differ just as sharply. Mechanical prosthetics are generally suited for basic actions such as steadying objects or holding lightweight items, often operated through harness mechanisms or body shifts.
Bionic arms offer far greater functionality, allowing complex finger movements, a range of grip patterns and smoother rotation at the wrist or elbow, all controlled through muscle contractions in the remaining limb.
How Much Does A Bionic Hand Cost?
In general, a basic bionic arm in India may cost between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. More sophisticated versions equipped with enhanced features and mobility typically range from Rs 20 lakh to Rs 45 lakh.
Highly advanced imported models, which often include the latest technology and precision engineering, can exceed Rs 45 lakh and may even cross the Rs 1 crore mark.
Are There Bionic Arms With AI?
Usage of AI in bionic arms is a work in progress.
A team of scientists at the University of Utah is turning to artificial intelligence to improve how bionic hands function. By equipping a commercially produced prosthetic hand with proximity and pressure sensors and training an artificial neural network to recognise grasping patterns, the researchers created a system capable of responding more naturally to user intent.
Participants using the AI-assisted device achieved more stable and precise grips while also experiencing reduced cognitive strain.
During trials, volunteers were able to perform several routine tasks, including picking up small objects and lifting a cup, by using a range of grip styles. Notably, these actions required minimal instruction or prior practice.
The project was led by engineering professor Jacob A. George alongside postdoctoral researcher Marshall Trout from the Utah NeuroRobotics Lab. Their findings were recently published in Nature Communications.
