Man Claims Boss Harassed Him For Leaving 10 Mins Early And Said, ‘What You Are Doing Is Unacceptable’
Most offices have fixed working hours. But in some places, leaving on time can make employees feel uncomfortable. Even when the clock hits 5 pm, people often stay back, not because they have work left, but because they don’t want to be seen as the first to walk out.
One man shared a similar experience from his previous job. He spoke about working at a company where leaving at the official closing time was quietly frowned upon.
Leaving On Time Became A Problem
In his post, the man said he worked as an account manager at a firm that designed and built bakery stores. His shift was from 8:30 am to 5 pm. He usually reached the office early, around 8:15 am.
During his first week, he left work at about 5:05 or 5:10 pm. A few days later, his manager called him out. “‘What you’re doing is unacceptable,’" the manager told him. When he asked what was wrong, the manager replied, “‘Well, you’re leaving way too early, everybody’s talking about it.’"
The employee explained that he came to work at least 15 minutes before his shift every day. But the manager brushed it aside, saying, “No one sees you coming early."
No One Wanted To Be First
After that conversation, the man began paying attention to what others were doing. He noticed that most of his colleagues stayed until 5:20 or even 5:25 pm. According to him, it wasn’t because they had extra work. It was simply because no one wanted to be the first person to leave.
“I’m talking about a company with about 75 employees and all these employees were holding each other hostage to not leave ‘early’. It was 8 years ago when I left the company but it’s the worst work culture I’ve ever encountered. I always mention it to people as a bad example. Pure madness," he concluded his post, saying.
Many Shared Similar Stories
The post struck a chord with others who had faced similar work pressure.
A user wrote, “I used to work for a company where you could work 8-5 or 9-6, but they’d want you there 15 minutes prior to get settled at your desk blah blah. They then decided that if you were even so much as a minute late you would have to stay a full extra hour to make up for your tardiness. So if you clocked in at 8:01 you’re staying till 6pm. Same goes for lunch, you had to effectively use less than an hour otherwise you would be penalised. I couldn’t believe it when I joined my current company and they didn’t micro-manager or clock-watch. Everyone is much happier and more effective."
Another commented, “I worked at a place where a bunch of the employees would leave on the dot or a tick early, and when pressured as to why. They said they have to get to their second job because the first one didn’t pay enough."
“I’d make an absolute point of leaving at 5 pm as that’s when the payment stops. Soon there would be a trickle and then a flood of breaking out of the toxic mindset they are in," a person said.
“Sounds like a nightmare. reminds me of the time I was stuck in a similar trap. Glad I moved on. life’s too short for that nonsense," wrote another.
Someone else added, “In my office, there is a sign that asks, why are you reading this after 5 pm? And they’re still highly profitable."
Gurgaon Man Reveals Benefits of Late Working Hours
In October 2025, a Gurgaon employee sparked debate on LinkedIn by explaining why he prefers leaving work late. Working at an e-commerce enablement firm, he said it isn’t about workload or a toxic culture but avoiding the city’s traffic.
“I hate leaving the office early. Leaving late lets me skip rush hour, reclaim my mornings, and start the day for myself," he wrote. He added that traffic drains mental energy and affects decision-making, calling flexible hours a simple productivity hack.
