Mumbai: With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections scheduled for January 15, 2026, political parties in Maharashtra have finalised their electoral preparations ahead of the December 30 nomination deadline, with vote counting scheduled for January 16, 2026.
BJP–Shiv Sena (Mahayuti)
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, contesting together under the Mahayuti alliance, have agreed on a seat-sharing arrangement for the 227-member BMC. Under the pact, the BJP will contest 137 wards, while the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) will field candidates in 90 wards, party leaders said, according to PTI reports. The two allies will campaign jointly across Mumbai and have kept space within their quotas to accommodate smaller alliance partners.
The seat-sharing formula was announced after several rounds of discussions between the allies and just ahead of the close of nominations, as both parties seek to retain control of India's richest civic body, which has been without an elected council since its term ended.
Congress and allies
In the opposition camp, the Indian National Congress on Monday released its first list of 70 candidates for the BMC elections, a day before the nomination deadline, PTI reported. The list was finalised after consultations with local units and alliance partners, with additional names expected in subsequent announcements.
The Congress is contesting the BMC polls as part of a seat-sharing agreement with the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA), under which the VBA will contest 62 wards in Mumbai as part of the Congress bloc, according to party leaders. The opposition alliance has also accommodated smaller partners, including the Rashtriya Samaj Paksh, in select wards.
NCP (Sharad Pawar faction)
The Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) is contesting the BMC elections independently and has named candidates for a limited number of wards without a formal seat-sharing pact with Congress in Mumbai, party sources said.
The BMC elections are being held alongside polls to 28 other municipal corporations across Maharashtra, marking one of the most significant rounds of local body elections in Maharashtra.
