Iran-US War: India is currently facing a crunch in LPG as several India-bound tankers carrying natural gas from the Gulf nations are being struck at the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow water passage that connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Households and restaurants across India have been facing a challenge to access LPG cylinders amid the shortage, prompting them to either use alternative methods or shut down their shops.
LPG shortage is happening as the flow of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz has come to a grinding halt amid the escalating tensions between US and Iran. As Iran has ramped up attacks on tankers attempting to go through the Strait, companies have decided to halt the flow as a precautionary measure. While Iran is allowing partial passing of the tankers, but the numbers are very meagre and limited.
As much as 3 lakh metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is currently stranded at the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, underlining the scale of disruption triggered by the ongoing West Asia crisis, according to a report of Moneycontrol.
India imports 50% of its natural gas.
In household terms, the volume of LPG stuck at the chokepoint is significant. With 3,00,000 metric tonnes translating to 30,00,00,000 kilograms, and a standard domestic LPG cylinder containing 14.2 kg of gas, the stranded fuel is equivalent to roughly 2.11 crore cylinders. This highlights the potential impact on millions of households if disruptions persist.
According to shipping ministry data, as many as 22 Indian-flagged vessels are currently stranded in the region. These include six LPG carriers, one LNG tanker, four crude oil tankers, one chemical and products carrier, three container ships, and two bulk carriers, among others. Notably, the six LPG carriers account for the entire 3 lakh metric tonnes of stranded LPG.
Some vessels, however, have managed to navigate through the tensions and reach Indian shores, offering limited relief. Two LPG carriers, Shivalik and Nanda Devi, safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz on March 14 and delivered approximately 92,700 metric tonnes of LPG to India. In addition, the Indian-flagged crude oil tanker Jag Laadki, carrying around 80,800 metric tonnes of crude oil from the United Arab Emirates, reached Mundra port in Gujarat on Wednesday.
The disruption comes amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia, triggered by the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical energy transit routes, and any slowdown or blockage in this corridor has immediate implications for global oil and gas supplies.
For India, which relies heavily on imports to meet its LPG and crude oil demand, the situation is particularly sensitive. While supplies remain stable for now due to buffer stocks and recent cargo arrivals, a prolonged disruption could tighten availability, raise import costs, and exert pressure on domestic fuel pricing.
