Looking to deepen private sector R&D in emerging technologies, says MoS Jitendra Singh

India is set to deepen private sector involvement in research and development. This move aims to drive innovation and growth in emerging technologies and deep tech. The government believes technology will lead future economic expansion. This initiative follows successful private sector integration in areas like space and biotechnology.
New Delhi: The Centre is looking to deepen private sector involvement in research and development to drive innovation and growth in emerging technologies, deep tech and cutting-edge innovation, minister of state for science and technology Jitendra Singh said.
Speaking to ET, he said India's future economic expansion will increasingly be technology-led as the country climbs the ranks of the world's largest economies.
The remarks come ahead of the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC), the Department of Science and Technology's annual flagship event, being held from November 3 to 5 in collaboration with other ministries.
India's esteem in science and technology has gone up and the results have been encouraging since it was opened to the private sector, he said.
"For instance, in the space sector, this has been possible because of the personal support and intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who took the path- breaking decision of opening even the space and nuclear energy sectors to the private sector," he said.
Similarly, biotechnology is an upcoming sector because it's a considered view across the world that the next industrial revolution is going to be driven by it, he added.
India is among the first in the world to have launched a dedicated biotechnology policy, called BioE3-biotechnology for economy, environment and employment-which has also been largely opened to the private sector, the minister said.
As far as space voyages are concerned, India is now offering cues for others. The Chandrayaan Mission got the findings from the moon about the possibilities of water, which was the first of its kind.
"So, we would be coming out with results and providing it to the rest of the world in the true spirit of 'Vishwa Bandhu Bharat'," he said.
India's Deep Ocean Mission itself is the first of its kind, which has a great potential given the country's long coastal area.
"So, we are into deep tech also in those sectors which are relatively more exclusive to India, such as the agriculture sector, the biodiversity sector, our vast Himalayan resources," he said.
Nuclear Energy
"A series of meetings have taken place on the required changes to be made in the existing Acts, and I think very soon we'll be able to frame the rules," he said."Once we get initiated into the private sector, we should be very reassuring to them and encouraging so that they find it attractive enough. We may have to bring certain provisions for validations in the Parliament, but we do not want to proceed in haste," he said.
To open nuclear energy for the private sector is a very courageous announcement because nobody imagined that the government would do so, Singh said. It was almost considered taboo and nobody even demanded that, considering that it would never happen, he added.
