Lleyton Hewitt Vows To Appeal Davis Cup Suspension For Shoving Anti-Doping Official
Unrepentant Australian Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt has vowed to appeal a two-week suspension handed down for shoving a doping control chaperone, insisting the decision lacked fairness and transparency.
The 44-year-old former world No. 1 was sanctioned on Wednesday by an independent tribunal under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme, which also imposed a fine of AUD 30,000 (USD 19,800).
The incident dates back to November 2024, after Australia's Davis Cup semi-final defeat to Italy in Spain, when Hewitt was accused of pushing a 60-year-old volunteer chaperone tasked with escorting players for anti-doping tests. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) charged him in January, citing “offensive conduct."
Hewitt Maintains Innocence
Hewitt, a two-time Grand Slam champion, has denied wrongdoing throughout the process, arguing that he acted in self-defence.
After a July hearing in Sydney, tribunal chairman Michael Heron upheld the charge, triggering the suspension. However, the penalty only takes effect from September 24, allowing Hewitt to lead Australia in this weekend's second-round Davis Cup qualifier against Belgium in Sydney.
Speaking at Ken Rosewall Arena, Hewitt hit out at both the ruling and the handling of the case:
“I'm just really disappointed about the overall decision but also the whole process to be honest, and the lack of facts that have been put out," he said.
“I'll be going to the appeal process with my legal team, so I won't be talking about it any further."
When asked if he had considered stepping down as captain ahead of the tie, Hewitt was unequivocal:
“No. Unlike the ITIA and the ITF, I won't be making it a distraction for the Davis Cup. This competition means too much. I think deep down it will make the boys even stronger to go out there and get the job done."

Once active, Hewitt's suspension will bar him from all tennis-related activities, including coaching, mentoring, playing, captaincy, and media roles.
