A Japanese man from Nara has shocked the world with his story of silence. Otou Katayama did not speak to his wife, Yumi, for 20 long years. They lived in the same house, raised their children, and even had a third child during this time.
But despite living together, Otou never said a word to Yumi. He responded only with nods, grunts, or small gestures. Yumi tried many times to talk to him, but he refused to answer.

Why He Stayed Silent
Years later, Otou finally revealed the reason for his silence. He said he felt left out and ignored. According to him, Yumi gave all her attention to their children. At first, he felt upset. But soon, this turned into deep jealousy. He was hurt that he didn't feel important to his wife anymore.
Instead of speaking up, he chose to remain silent. What began as sulking became a habit that lasted two decades.
Children Step In
Their children grew up watching this strange silence. They couldn't remember ever seeing their parents have a conversation. Finally, the children decided to take action. They contacted a Japanese TV show called TV Hokkaido for help.
The show planned a surprise meeting for the couple. They arranged it at the park where Otou and Yumi had their first date many years ago. The kids and TV crew watched the meeting from a distance.
An Emotional Reunion
At first, Otou found it hard to speak. But after a few minutes, he finally talked to Yumi. He told her he knew his silence had caused her pain. He admitted he had been jealous and felt sorry.
Then, he thanked Yumi for staying with him. He said he was grateful she never left him, even though he hadn't spoken to her in 20 years. Yumi listened quietly as her husband spoke for the first time in two decades.
