Rahul Gandhi has intensified his criticism of the Election Commission, accusing it of colluding with PM Modi and Amit Shah in "vote theft." He alleges a 2023 law protects election commissioners from accountability and claims 6.5 million votes were deleted in Bihar to benefit Adani and Ambani.
Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Sunday escalated his attack on the Election Commission, accusing it of colluding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in “vote theft” and alleging that a law passed in 2023 was specifically designed to protect election commissioners from accountability.
“I want to ask them, you made a law for CCTV. Then why did you change that law? Why did the government change it?” Gandhi said while addressing supporters during his Voter Adhikar Yatra.
“Do you know that no case can be filed against the Election Commissioner? Do you know when this law was made? This law was made in 2023. Why was this law made in 2023? Because Narendra Modi and Amit Shah want that no action can be taken against the Election Commission. Because the Election Commission is helping them and is stealing votes with them.”
‘65 lakh votes deleted in Bihar'
Gandhi said the INDIA alliance was determined to resist what he described as a systematic disenfranchisement of voters in Bihar. “We, INDIA alliance leaders, have made up our mind that we will not allow vote theft in Bihar,” he declared.Referring to a viral clip from his yatra, he continued: “Did you see my video where I am drinking tea with dead people? The Election Commission killed people who are alive. Their name was deleted. I asked them why their name was deleted? They said that order came from above. Order of Narendra Modi, order of Election Commission and they are deducting votes of lakhs of people in Bihar.”
“They have deleted votes of 65 lakh people. Why? To help Adani and Ambani, so that they steal all your money... The last thing left in the hands of the poor is votes, they are also trying to snatch that,” Gandhi alleged.
‘One crore new voters in Maharashtra'
Citing the sequence of elections in Maharashtra earlier this year, Gandhi alleged irregularities in voter rolls. “Lok Sabha elections were held in Maharashtra, and INDIA alliance wins. Four months later, Vidhan Sabha elections were held and in the same Maharashtra, BJP alliance sweeps and our alliance was not visible. It disappears,” he said.“When we investigated, we found out that Election Commission magically created one crore new voters in four months after Lok Sabha elections. Wherever new voters came, BJP won there. Our votes did not decrease. The INDIA alliance got as many votes in the Vidhan Sabha as it had in the Lok Sabha. BJP got all the new voters. So we got suspicious,” Gandhi added.
According to him, repeated queries to the Commission about the alleged surge in voter numbers were stonewalled. “We told Election Commission to explain this to us. Where did these one crore voters come from? Who are they? Election Commission tells us that we will not explain. We do not need you to explain,” he said.
Gandhi further accused the poll body of denying opposition parties access to surveillance and electoral data mandated by law. “Then we told them that you have installed CCTVs. The law is that CCTV cameras will have to be provided to any party asking for CCTV. They say they will not provide CCTV. Then we said give us the voter list. They say they will not provide the electronic voter list,” he claimed.
Charging the Commission with active collusion, he declared: “The Election Commission and the BJP together have committed theft in Bengaluru Central. I am telling you this with a guarantee.”
EC's ultimatum to RaGa
His comments come just hours after Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar issued a blunt ultimatum, asking Gandhi to either substantiate his allegations through a sworn affidavit or apologise publicly.“Either you will have to submit an affidavit or apologise before the country. There's no other option,” Kumar said on Sunday.
He also warned that unless Gandhi filed a declaration under oath within seven days, his claims would be treated as “baseless and invalid.”
The Commission's sharp response was triggered by Gandhi's repeated charges that the voter list revision exercise in Bihar and other states was designed to disenfranchise large numbers of opposition-leaning voters.
