Lando Norris Clinches Miami GP Sprint Pole; Mercedes' Russell Struggles
It might still be early in the season, but McLaren are beginning to look like a team with their edge back.
Defending world champion Lando Norris delivered when it mattered, securing pole position for the Miami Grand Prix Sprint qualifying on Friday night with a sharp 1:27.869 lap.
Norris Takes Miami Sprint Pole
Norris edged out Kimi Antonelli by 0.222 seconds, with teammate Oscar Piastri making it a strong outing for McLaren in third. Charles Leclerc slotted into fourth to complete the front two rows.
The result offered a timely response from Norris, who had endured a tricky stretch without a top-two finish across recent races. A fifth-place start to 2026 in Australia and Japan, along with a DNS in China due to mechanical issues, had raised questions. But Miami provided a reset.
McLaren’s Upgrades Pay Off
McLaren introduced key upgrades for the Miami weekend, and the impact was immediate.
With both cars in the top three, the team showed clear gains in one-lap pace. Piastri’s performance reinforced that this wasn’t a one-off lap from Norris, but a broader step forward.
Ferrari also stayed in the mix, with Lewis Hamilton finishing seventh, pointing to a tight fight between McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes in sprint trim.
Russell and Verstappen Play Catch-Up
It was a tougher session for George Russell, who ended up sixth, over six-tenths off Norris. Max Verstappen slotted in just ahead in fifth, as both drivers struggled to match McLaren’s pace in the Miami heat.
Further back, Alpine’s Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly took P8 and P10, with Red Bull rookie Isack Hadjar in between.
Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg narrowly missed the top 10, while Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz exited in SQ2 for Williams. Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad finished 16th, ahead of teammate Liam Lawson, who was eliminated in SQ1.
At the back, Cadillac’s Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas struggled on their home weekend, while Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll rounded out the order.
