'Kobbie Is the Future': Ruben Amorim Sends Clear Message To Old Trafford
Ruben Amorim has made one thing clear: Kobbie Mainoo is Manchester United's future — even if the present is on pause.
The 20-year-old midfielder has slipped down the pecking order this season, managing just one Carabao Cup start and limited minutes overall. A recent calf injury hasn't helped, halting his chance to “fight for his job" just as United's injury list swelled.
But Amorim isn't panicking — or backing down.
“Kobbie will have his opportunity," the United boss insisted. “He can play as a six, in a three-man midfield, or higher up. He's going to be the future of Manchester United. Football changes in two days."
Amorim sees Mainoo as a long-term cornerstone, not a short-term solution — a player who fits multiple systems and will grow into responsibility rather than be rushed into it.
With January approaching, Amorim played down the idea of a loan move, especially given United's thin squad. Letting Mainoo leave without a replacement, he admitted, would be a risk the club can't afford.
United's midfield remains an area of concern, with uncertainty surrounding veterans like Casemiro and Harry Maguire heading into the summer. But Amorim stressed the club is sticking to its broader plan — prioritising players who represent the next era, not quick fixes.
“If a player comes, it will be someone for the future," he said. “If not, we trust what we have."

And that trust extends squarely to Mainoo. Injured, underused, and waiting — but very much central to Amorim's vision.
