Kolkata Knight Riders have released fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh after being told to do so by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Indian Premier League (IPL) team said on Saturday amid growing tensions between the countries.
Last month, hundreds protested near Bangladesh's High Commission in New Delhi after Hindu factory worker Dipu Chandra Das was beaten and set on fire in Bangladesh's Mymensingh district by a crowd that accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad.
A total of 12 people were arrested in connection with his death. “Due to recent developments going on all across, the BCCI has instructed Kolkata Knight Riders to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, from their squad,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told ANI.
“They can ask for a replacement if needed. And upon request, BCCI will allow a replacement player.” Later on Saturday, KKR confirmed Mustafizur had been released. “The release has been carried out following due process and consultations, upon the instruction of the BCCI,” the team said in a statement.
Mustafizur, 30, has played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals in previous seasons of the IPL, taking 65 wickets in 60 matches overall in an IPL career that started in 2016. He was signed by KKR in last month's auction for a fee of `9.2 crore, making him the most expensive player from Bangladesh in IPL history.
‘DECISION RELATED ONLY TO IPL'
The decision to release Mustafizur is limited only to the IPL, with no decision yet on Bangladesh's T20 World Cup games in India, said Indian cricket board chief Mithun Manhas. “The BCCI has taken this decision after thorough consultation, and Mr Saikia has already conveyed it to the media.The decision is related only to the IPL; we have not discussed the World Cup yet. We will share details once that is done,” Manhas told IANS on Saturday. Just a day before Saikia's remarks on Mustafizur, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) unveiled its home season schedule starting in March 2026, which includes a white-ball series of three ODIs and three T20Is against India.
This series, originally slated for 2025, has now been rescheduled. Additionally, Bangladesh are set to visit India earlier for the T20 World Cup in February-March. In Sylhet, BCB President Aminul Islam Bulbul announced an emergency meeting of the body to discuss the issue later tonight. “...we have arranged to call an emergency meeting at 9:30pm (10pm IST) to know about the matter in detail. Then, we will get a clear overview and may issue a media release,” Bulbul said.
Mustafizur was allowed to register for the auction by the Indian Board but the IndoBangladesh ties have grown more tense amid political unrest in that country.
