Kerala Man’s Day-1 Experience At Navi Mumbai Airport: ‘Free WiFi, Chalo Buses & No Slums...’
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) marked a significant milestone in Indian aviation this Christmas by commencing commercial flight operations on December 25. As passengers began using the new airport, firsthand experiences quickly surfaced on social media, offering glimpses into what it felt like to land at NMIA on its very first day of operations.
That first-hand view came from Rahul Srinivas, a traveller from Kerala, who was on IndiGo's inaugural Ahmedabad-Navi Mumbai flight. Through a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Rahul documented his landing, his movement through the airport and his onward journey into Mumbai.
Kerala Man On Inaugural Flight Of Navi Mumbai Airport
Rahul's first post focused on the landing itself. He shared a short video from the aircraft that showed how the approach into Navi Mumbai looked different from what many flyers are used to while landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
“Landing in Mumbai, without having to witness the slums is a welcome sight. The first landing of Indigo's Ahmedabad Navi Mumbai flight," he wrote. The video showed open land and infrastructure instead of the dense settlements of Dharavi which are often visible during landings at Mumbai's main airport.

Certificate For Inaugural Flight
In another post, Rahul shared a photograph of a certificate given to passengers who were part of the inaugural flight operations at the airport. Treating it as a personal milestone, he wrote, “Isko frame karke rakhunga (I will frame this and keep it)", followed by, “Thank you Navi Mumbai International Airport."

Experience Inside NMIA
Rahul then detailed his experience after stepping inside the terminal and listed practical points that stood out during his exit from the airport. He noted that mobile network connectivity was not available at the time. To feel the gal, free Wi-Fi access is available.
“There is no mobile network currently. But there's access to free WiFi. You can use it to book cabs. And keep Wi-Fi calling option on. Else the cabbie won't be able to call you," he wrote.
He also explained the layout for onward travel. According to his post, travellers need to go one level down after exiting the terminal to reach public transport facilities. He mentioned that Chalo buses to Colaba and other parts of the city were operational from the very first day.
At the same time, Rahul pointed out that construction work is still ongoing in parts of the airport. “The airport is still pretty much under construction. There's lots of work still pending. I even saw some leaks being plugged," he wrote.

From NMIA To Palghar
Rahul also shared details of his onward journey after leaving the airport. In a separate post, he broke down his travel timeline to Palghar. “Only took me 4.5 hours to reach Palghar from NMIA," he wrote. He landed at 1 PM, reached Churchgate, boarded the 3:18 PM Dahanu local and arrived in Palghar (PLG) at 5:30 PM.

Airport Branding That Caught Attention
Airport branding also became part of the conversation online. One X user shared a post showing Coca-Cola cans with Navi Mumbai International Airport branding being sold inside the terminal. “That's innovative!! Haven't seen something like before. Coca cola cans with Navi Mumbai Airport branding at the airport. Nice collectible item," the user wrote.

The start of operations at NMIA was marked with a traditional water cannon salute for the first arrival and departure flights, according to news agency PTI. The greenfield airport was first conceived in 1997 by Maharashtra's City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). Construction gathered pace years later and faced multiple delays, such as disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in 2018 and inaugurated the airport on October 8 this year. On its first day of commercial operations, domestic flights were operated by IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air and Star Air.
