Kerala Couple Gives OG Desi Breakfast Combo ‘Bun Maska & Chai’ Cool Makeover. Now, Everyone Wants A Bite
A Kerala couple began their business with just one borrowed table, their grandmother's kitchen flask, and eyes full of dreams. Soon, their steaming cup of milk tea and a soft, buttery bun became a daily ritual for many living in Kochi. At the centre of this craze is a young couple, Sreelakshmi and Saran, who have become popular in the city as The Chai Couple.
They first met at Chinmaya College in Ernakulam. Soon, they became best friends and later decided to get married. Following their wedding, Sreelakshmi moved to Belgium, while Saran moved to Canada due to their respective work commitments. After living apart for two years, they decided to return home, be with their loved ones, and start something on their own.
How Did The Chai Couple Become A Sensation In Kochi?
With nothing more than a borrowed table, a flask from their grandmother's kitchen, and a white Maruti Suzuki Alto, they set up a tiny pop-up stall. Initially, they planned to sell just one item and see if anyone liked it. Soon, they got the answer. People did not just like it, they loved their simple cup of chai and soft bun maska with it. Positive word of mouth, social media content and friends tagging friends led to the growth of their business and made them a sensation in Kochi.
“We first made only 20 cups of tea and 20 pieces of bun. Now, we serve only bun maska and special tea," the couple told Onmanorama. They shared that they planned to add new items to the menu after people liked their tea and buns, but they are unable to expand it for now because they have been busy with the huge demand for their best-selling items.
The Chai Couple Shares How They “Lured In" Customers Initially
And not just people from Kochi, but some travelled from Kasaragod, Kozhikode and even Bengaluru to try their tea and buns. Today, the couple have people coming from faraway places, but initially, they did not have that many customers. That's when their family and friends came out to support them.

They told the outlet, “Our friends would gather around this table, creating an impression of a crowd to lure customers. There have been incidents when they would just blow into an empty teacup, pretending that they are drinking hot tea." Now, the Chai Couple is planning to open a cafe following the huge success of their simple tea and bun maska. They said their favourite moment is watching people take the first dunk and bite.
Bun maska and chai are a common snack at Mumbai and Pune's old Irani cafes. Now, it has taken over Kerala as well for a few simple reasons. First, it is not heavy on the pocket, the taste is simple, and well, it sends people on a nostalgic trip.
