A controversial video allegedly filmed near Kedarnath Temple has gone viral on social media, triggering outrage among devotees and netizens over the behaviour of some pilgrims during the sacred Char Dham Yatra.
The viral clip shows a group of men sitting and relaxing inside a tented accommodation area reportedly set up for pilgrims visiting Kedarnath. Food packets, water bottles, bags, and personal belongings can be seen scattered around the tent while a few men appear visibly uncomfortable after noticing they are being recorded.
So called devotees were caught drinking alcohol inside tents at Kedarnath. Earlier, police recovered 2 sharp-edged weapons & 2 guns frm a pilgrim’s tent. What has particularly angered people online are claims circulating alongside the video alleging that alcohol was being consumed inside the tent near the holy shrine area. The video is widely spreading as many social media users criticise the growing trend of treating religious pilgrimages like casual vacation spots rather than spiritual journeys.
The controversy intensified further after references were made online to earlier reports in which police allegedly recovered sharp-edged weapons and firearms from another pilgrim tent during the ongoing yatra season. Though authorities have not officially linked the incidents together, the discussions online have added to public concern around security and discipline in pilgrimage zones.
Many devotees expressed disappointment, arguing that places like Kedarnath hold deep religious and spiritual importance for millions of Hindus and should be treated with respect and responsibility.
One user wrote, “People wait their entire lives to visit Kedarnath with devotion, not for this kind of behaviour."
Another commented, “Religious tourism is slowly becoming entertainment for some people."
A third user said, “Strict checking and monitoring should happen around pilgrimage camps."
Many reactions online were equally strong. “Holy places deserve basic respect and discipline," one person wrote.
Another commented, “Kedarnath is not a party destination." Some users also praised social media for bringing such incidents into public discussion, with one saying, “Social media is exposing what normally goes unnoticed."
At the same time, a section of users urged caution before concluding solely from viral clips. “Authorities should properly investigate before people start spreading assumptions," one comment read.
Others stressed that spiritual destinations should remain peaceful and respectful spaces for devotees visiting with genuine faith.
