Kai Havertz's Late Goal Sends Arsenal to First League Cup Final in 8 Years
Arsenal secured their first League Cup final appearance in eight years with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the semi-final second leg on Tuesday, thanks to Kai Havertz's late goal.
Mikel Arteta's team had taken the advantage in the first leg, and Havertz's goal off the bench sealed a 4-2 aggregate win at the Emirates Stadium.
This win was particularly significant for Arsenal, who had previously lost in four consecutive semi-finals in the 2025 Champions League and League Cup, the 2022 League Cup, and the 2021 Europa League.
Arsenal's first final in six years will see them face either Manchester City or Newcastle at Wembley on March 22. City currently lead Newcastle 2-0 heading into Wednesday's second leg at the Etihad Stadium.
Arsenal have not won the League Cup since 1993, having lost their last three final appearances. They now have the opportunity to end that drought and claim their first trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, the only silverware Arteta has won since his appointment in December 2019.
“We knew it was going to be a real battle out there. That resilience, that clarity to understand what kind of game we had to play, we did so well," Arteta commented. “There was a special atmosphere inside our stadium. It makes such a difference. We've been waiting a few years to get into this position and we're certainly going to enjoy it."
This season is shaping up to be memorable for Arsenal, who are six points clear at the top of the Premier League and reached the Champions League last 16 by winning all eight of their group matches.
Despite their success, Arsenal have faced criticism for their reliance on goals from corners and set-pieces. Arteta defended his team's style of play, stating he has a “massive book of people" who believe Arsenal are the “most exciting in Europe."
Tuesday's hard-fought match may not silence Arsenal's critics, but Arteta will be unfazed after leading his team to Wembley.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior had won six of his seven matches in all competitions since taking over from Enzo Maresca, but he couldn't solve the challenge posed by Arsenal, who handed him his only two defeats.
“Arsenal know they were in a game, over both ties. We dominated the areas we wanted to in the second half, but we didn't find that quality moment," Rosenior said. “It's painful to lose. We just need to keep making improvements, which I'm seeing from the first leg to the second."
Without captain Martin Odegaard, sidelined by a muscle problem, and winger Bukayo Saka, injured during the pre-match warm-up at Leeds on Saturday, Arsenal were not at their best but managed to secure the win.
Rosenior's switch to a three-man central defence stifled Arsenal during a scrappy first half. However, the Gunners briefly found their rhythm when Piero Hincapie's curler was saved by Robert Sanchez.
The heavy rain in the first half forced Rosenior to remove his glasses to see clearly. Squinting through the downpour, he witnessed Malo Gusto's error which allowed Gabriel Martinelli a chance, though the Chelsea defender recovered to block the shot.
Chelsea's first shot on target came in the 43rd minute when Enzo Fernandez's long-range effort was punched clear by Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Needing a goal, Rosenior introduced Cole Palmer and Estevao Willian after an hour, abandoning the back three. Estevao immediately set up Fernandez for a shot that went over the bar, but Chelsea's threat soon diminished.
Havertz delivered the decisive blow in the final seconds of stoppage time, rounding Sanchez to score into an empty net after Chelsea were caught on the counter-attack.
