Jemimah Rodrigues is shedding light on a subject rarely discussed in professional sport, menstruation and the quiet stigma that continues to surround it, even in elite cricketing environments.
In a candid interaction, the Indian batter spoke about the challenges of managing periods while maintaining the physical and mental demands of the game. She revealed that earlier in her career, there was a noticeable reluctance to speak openly about menstrual health. “There was a hesitation about speaking up," she admitted, recalling how discomfort, cramps, and fatigue often made training sessions more difficult.
Rodrigues explained that like many young girls in India, conversations around menstruation were limited while growing up. The subject was often treated as private or uncomfortable, leaving many unsure about how to navigate it, especially in high-performance spaces like sport.
Over time, however, her perspective has evolved. Today, she emphasises the importance of listening to one’s body and normalising these conversations within teams. Whether it means pushing through on certain days or stepping back when needed, she believes both are equally valid approaches to maintaining long-term performance and well-being.
The cricketer also highlighted how periods can impact athletes differently, noting that some teammates experience severe discomfort that can affect focus and movement. In such situations, open communication with coaches and support staff becomes crucial, allowing workloads to be adjusted without stigma.
More broadly, Rodrigues called for earlier and more open discussions around menstrual health both at home and in schools, so that young girls do not grow up feeling restricted or confused about a natural biological process.
Her candid remarks underline a larger shift in women’s sport, where conversations around health, body awareness, and mental well-being are slowly becoming more visible. By speaking openly, Rodrigues is not just addressing a personal experience but helping push the conversation forward, one that has long remained on the sidelines.
