Jaipur Man ‘Attempts Suicide’ After Losing Rs 22,000 To Online Gaming Scam: ‘He Skipped Meals To Save Money For College’
A young man in Jaipur nearly took his own life after falling victim to an online scam, according to a detailed post shared by his friend on Reddit. The post sheds light on how people who trust easily can be exploited by strangers they only know through gaming.
In the post titled, “My friend got scammed for Rs 22,000 and he attempted suicide," the Redditor explained that he and his friend live together in a small 1BHK flat. One evening, he tried calling his friend multiple times around 7 PM but received no response.
“We are two friends living together in a small 1BHK flat in Jaipur, managing things somehow. Yesterday, I wasn't home. Around 7 PM, I tried calling my friend several times more than 10 times but he didn't respond. That worried me, because he always replies or leaves a message if he's busy," the Reddit user wrote.
Worried, he rushed home and found his friend inside, crying and holding “around 6–8 sleeping pills." Using a master key, he managed to get inside and tried to calm him down.
“Threw away the pills and asked what happened," he wrote.
‘Scammed Of Rs 22,000'
The Reddit post revealed that the friend had been saving money for his college semester fees. A person he met while playing BGMI (Battlegrounds Mobile India, a popular online multiplayer battle royale game) for just three months contacted him and claimed that his mother was hospitalised and urgently needed financial help.
“Out of kindness, my friend sent him the money. But later, when he tried to reach that person, the number was off, he was unfriended from BGMI, and blocked on Instagram and WhatsApp," he added.
The Reddit user further revealed that his friend's father is a labourer and he had been saving the money for two months.
“I remember how he used to skip meals to save. He's one of the most innocent people I know, and seeing him like this broke me. Is there any way I can help him recover from this both mentally and financially?" the Redditor concluded.
Sympathy vs Criticism: Redditors Weigh In
The post drew significant attention as fellow Redditors expressed sympathy and urged friends to keep checking in while others recommended legal action.
One user commented, “He sent Rs 22,000 to a BGMI acquaintance? And his parents do physical labour? That's heartbreaking. I don't blame him. He sounds painfully kind and very trusting. The world treats people like him poorly. Please keep checking in with him as much as you can."
Another suggested filing a police complaint, saying, “Just straight up go to the police and file a FIR. 22,000 is a big amount. Also gather all evidence, screenshots of payments and him asking for money etc. and try contacting him from another phone that you are gonna take legal steps."
“It's because of scammers like this that genuine people in need find it hard to get help. Your heart just hardens and you treat any such requests for help as scams," someone else wrote
While many sympathised, some users criticised the victim for sending such a large sum to someone he barely knew online.
“In what way did he just decide to send such an amount to an online friend???? I would say, he kinda had it coming. This should be a lesson for life," a person remarked while an individual said, “Damn he is an idiot, not innocent or kind, just plain darn stupid. He should treat it as a lesson, 22k is still better than being scammed of all your life savings later on."
The Redditor also shared that they were able to collect Rs 16,000 for their friend.
