ISRO’s PSLV-C62 launch hits anomaly after third stage
ISRO PSLV Rocket Launch

ISRO's PSLV-C62 mission, carrying the EOS-N1 satellite and 15 others, encountered a deviation in its flight path shortly after liftoff. While the mission successfully launched from Sriharikota, an anomaly was detected during the third stage, prompting an immediate analysis by ISRO.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) opened India's space calendar for 2026 with the liftoff of its PSLV-C62 mission, carrying the EOS-N1 Earth observation satellite along with 15 co-passenger satellites.

The mission lifted off at 10:18:30 IST on Monday from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

However, less than 30 minutes after the launch, ISRO encountered deviation in the launch vehicle, with Chairman V. Narayanan acknowledging disturbance in the flight's path.

PSLV-C62 encounters an anomaly

"The performance was normal upto the end of the third stage. There is a deviation of sort in the flight path, we are analyzing the data and we will comeback at the earliest," Narayanan said in a press conference, shortly after the launch.

A detailed analysis has been inititated by ISRO to understand to issue.

"The PSLV-C62 mission encountered an anomaly during end of the PS3 stage. A detailed analysis has been initiated," ISRO said in post on X.

The 44.4-metre-tall, four-stage PSLV-C62 rose from the First Launch Pad precisely at 10:18 hours on Monday, beginning a carefully sequenced flight profile over the Bay of Bengal.

About 17 minutes into the mission, the rocket supposed to inject its payloads into a Sun Synchronous Orbit at an altitude of around 511 km. Once all satellites are deployed, ISRO scientists plan to restart the rocket's fourth stage (PS4) to initiate a controlled de-boost manoeuvre.

The PS4 restart will place the stage on a re-entry trajectory, enabling the separation of the final payload — the Kestrel Initial Technology Demonstrator (KID) capsule. The entire sequence, including de-boosting and re-entry operations, is expected to extend beyond two hours after liftoff. This, however, is subject to the mission's unhindered completion.

According to ISRO, both the PS4 stage and the KID capsule are designed to re-enter Earth's atmosphere and splash down in the South Pacific Ocean, concluding the mission's technology demonstration phase.

The launch marked the 64th flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the ninth dedicated commercial mission undertaken by NewSpace India Limited (NSIL).

Live coverage of the mission began at 09:45 IST, leading up to the morning liftoff.

ISRO had earlier confirmed that the integration of the launch vehicle and satellites had been completed, with pre-launch checks progressing as planned ahead of the scheduled launch.

What is the PSLV-C62 / EOS-N1 mission?

The PSLV-C62 mission has been undertaken by NSIL to build and launch the EOS-N1 Earth observation satellite for a user, while also providing end-to-end launch services for 15 co-passenger satellites belonging to domestic and international customers. NSIL is responsible for the entire launch campaign, from satellite integration to mission execution.

This mission is being flown using the PSLV-DL configuration, which features two solid strap-on motors to enhance lift capability.

The PSLV-DL variant is typically chosen for missions requiring higher performance while retaining the reliability and precision that have defined PSLV's track record across diverse mission profiles.

PSLV-C62 is the ninth dedicated commercial mission executed by NSIL, underscoring ISRO's growing role in the global launch services market.

EOS-N1 and its role

EOS-N1 is an Earth observation satellite designed to strengthen space-based monitoring capabilities. Satellites in the EOS series are generally used for environmental monitoring, resource mapping, disaster management support and planning, forming a key part of India's civilian space applications.

The satellite will operate as the primary payload of the PSLV-C62 mission, with its successful deployment forming the central objective of the launch.

In addition to the main payload, the mission also includes a technology demonstration. The PSLV-C62 mission is carrying the Kestrel Initial Technology Demonstrator (KID), developed by a Spanish startup.

KID is a small-scale prototype of a re-entry vehicle and will be the last co-passenger satellite to be injected during the mission. After completing its in-orbit phase, the demonstrator is slated to re-enter Earth's atmosphere and splash down in the South Pacific Ocean.

The demonstration is expected to contribute critical data for the development of future re-entry systems, adding a technology validation dimension to the commercial launch.

PSLV's legacy as ISRO's workhorse

Over the past two decades, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle has established itself as the backbone of India's launch capabilities. With the PSLV-C62 mission, the rocket has now completed 63 prior missions, including several landmark launches.

These include Chandrayaan-1, India's first lunar mission; the Mars Orbiter Mission; Aditya-L1; and AstroSat. In 2017, PSLV achieved a global milestone by successfully launching 104 satellites in a single mission, a world record that highlighted its precision and reliability.

With PSLV-C62, ISRO not only begins its 2026 launch calendar but also reinforces PSLV's continuing role as a dependable platform for scientific, commercial and technology demonstration missions.
