Israel Announces Plan To Open Rafah Crossing. What It Means For Gazans

Israel on Wednesday announced reopening of Rafah crossing, Gaza's main gateway, in the next few days allowing Palestinians who are in need of medical care.

The Times of Israel quoted COGAT, the Israeli military arm that oversees humanitarian matters, saying that Palestinians will be able to leave Gaza via the Rafah Crossing in coordination with Egypt, after Israeli security approval, and under the supervision of a European Union delegation — a mechanism similar to one activated in January.

According to United Nations, about 16,500 people in Gaza are in need of medical care though some citizens have been able to leave for medical treatment abroad via Israel.

“We have been waiting for the Rafah opening for months," said Gaza businessman Tamer al-Burai, who needs treatment abroad for a respiratory condition. “At last, I and thousands of other patients, may have a chance to receive proper treatment," Burai told Reuters by phone from Gaza.

Before the beginning of the war, the Rafah crossing was sole direct exit point for most Palestinians in Gaza to reach the outside world and also the key entry point for aid to reach the territory.

Since the ceasefire came into effect in October this year, Israel kept Rafah closed saying Hamas must return all hostages still in Gaza.

Israel's bombardment of Gaza was triggered by the deadly Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people in Israel.

Since a fragile ceasefire took hold on October 10, the reported death toll in Gaza has kept climbing steadily as authorities there take advantage of the relative calm to search for bodies in the wreckage. Several families have been shattered due to Israel's retaliatory action.
