Amid the ongoing Iran-US-Israel war, US President Donald Trump on Friday claimed that Iran’s top leadership has been wiped out, deepening uncertainty over who is in charge in Tehran during the ongoing war. Speaking publicly, Trump said Iran’s supreme leader is no longer alive and suggested that the country’s leadership structure has collapsed.
“Their supreme leader is no longer supreme. He’s dead," Trump said, adding that other leaders had also been killed. He further claimed that Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who was named as successor, may either be dead or seriously injured.
Trump made the remarks during an address at the Future Investment Initiative Priority Summit in Miami. At one point, his comments triggered laughter in the room as he gave a blunt assessment of Iran’s situation.
“Their anti-aircraft and communications capabilities are totally dismantled and dead. And their leaders are all dead. Other than that, I think they’re doing quite well," he said.
He repeated that Iran’s leadership had been eliminated, saying, “No, their leaders are dead. Their supreme leader is no longer supreme. He’s dead. The son is either dead or in very bad shape because nobody’s heard from him."
Trump said US military strikes had gone beyond expectations and had severely weakened Iran’s military power. He claimed that key parts of Iran’s armed forces and defence systems had been destroyed.
“Iran’s navy is gone. It’s all sunk at the bottom of the gulf… Their air force is totally, completely dead," he said.
He also stated that Iran’s anti-aircraft systems and communication networks had been dismantled. According to Trump, US forces were destroying missile stockpiles and targeting drone and missile production facilities. He said the country’s defence industrial base had been reduced significantly.
After Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei was killed in strikes on February 28, Tehran announced that his son, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, would take over as the new supreme leader.
However, his current condition remains unclear. He has not appeared in public since being named successor. US officials have said he was wounded during the war. Reports also indicate that Iran’s Guard and other military units are operating without a clear central command.
Trump had earlier raised questions about Mojtaba Khamenei’s condition. On March 16, he said it was not known whether the new leader was alive following reports that he had been injured in an air strike.
“We don’t know if he’s dead or not. I will say that nobody has seen him, which is unusual," Trump had said at an event at the White House.
Trump also claimed that Iran is now trying to negotiate amid the conflict. Speaking at the Miami summit, he said Tehran was pushing for talks.
“They are negotiating. They are begging to make a deal," he said.
The Iran war, which began on February 28, entered its second month on Saturday.
