Iran dramatically raises the stakes with its state TV issuing direct assassination threat to Trump
Iran news: Widespread violence in Iran has sharpened the confrontation between Tehran and Washington. Trump has warned that military action remains an option in response to the attacks on protesters, while Iranian officials have issued stark warnings of regional consequences if the US intervenes.
Iran has issued its most explicit threat yet against US President Donald Trump, airing an image on state television showing him injured during a 2024 campaign rally, accompanied by a warning that read: “This time it will not miss the target.”
The threat comes amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington over Iran's violent suppression of nationwide protests.

Media agencies reported that the image was shown on Iranian state-run television on Wednesday. It showed Trump bloodied during the assassination attempt at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where he was shot in the ear. The broadcast marked a sharp escalation in rhetoric from Tehran at a time when communication channels are already strained.
The warning follows repeated statements by Trump that the United States could strike Iran if it continues its crackdown on anti-government demonstrators. Iranian officials have responded by threatening retaliation against American forces in the region and against Israel if the US launches any military action.
The image of Trump reportedly originated from a pro-government rally inside Iran. Such rallies have been permitted to air on state television even as authorities have imposed widespread blackouts to limit coverage of the ongoing protests against the regime.
Iran has previously issued threats against Trump. In 2022, a video circulated by the Iranian regime depicted an assassination attempt on him at his Mar-a-Lago golf course, ahead of the 2024 US election. That video resurfaced recently following the arrest of Ryan Routh, who was detained while allegedly attempting to target Trump at the same location.
US authorities have also pointed to direct Iranian involvement in alleged plots against Trump. In 2024, the US Justice Department said it had disrupted an Iranian-led plan to kill him, following the arrest of Farhad Shakeri. Court documents allege that Shakeri was tasked by Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps with carrying out the assassination.
Inside Iran, the televised threat formed part of a broader show of defiance by the regime. Participants at recent pro-government rallies were seen holding anti-Trump placards and chanting “Death to America,” while pledging loyalty to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
These rallies are intended to counter the scale and persistence of protests that have spread across the country since December 28. The demonstrations were triggered by Iran's worsening economic conditions and have since evolved into a broader challenge to the ruling establishment.
The state's response has been severe. According to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency, more than 2,500 people have been killed since the protests began, with thousands more arrested as security forces moved to crush dissent.
The violence has sharpened the confrontation between Tehran and Washington. Trump has warned that military action remains an option in response to the attacks on protesters, while Iranian officials have issued stark warnings of regional consequences if the US intervenes.
