Internet Wonders How US McDonald’s Wrapper Reached Mumbai Street Vendor: ‘Is There An International Raddi Wala?’
A Mumbai woman’s post praising Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe has taken an unexpected turn online. While she highlighted better food packaging by a roadside vendor, many people ended up discussing something entirely different.
Instead of focusing on the food safety changes she mentioned, social media users noticed the wrapper in her photo and began asking how packaging linked to a US McDonald’s menu item ended up with a street vendor in Mumbai.
A Simple Observation Sparked Debate
The woman shared her experience on X as Maharashtra’s FDA continues a major drive against unsafe food practices under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe. She said her domestic help regularly bought snacks from a roadside vendor in South Mumbai.
According to her, the vendor had recently stopped using old newspapers to wrap food and had switched to food-grade wrapping paper. “Our domestic help buys snacks from a roadside street vendor in South Mumbai. From the last one week they don’t wrap food in newspaper but in proper food-grade wrapping. Never thought fear of one serious IAS officer would bring so much change. Enjoy while it lasts, Tukaram Mundhe," she wrote.
Her post was meant to praise the ongoing crackdown on food safety. However, the attached photograph quickly became the centre of attention.
Wrapper Raises Questions
Many users pointed out that the wrapper appeared to carry the branding for “Egg Bacon & Biscuit," a breakfast item sold by McDonald’s in the United States.
One user questioned how such packaging could reach a local food stall in Mumbai. “Egg Bacon & Biscuit is a menu item in USA McDonald’s. How did a random Mumbai street vendor find the wrapping paper for a US-exclusive McDonald’s menu item? Is there an international raddi wala? If this is recycled or reused waste from first-world countries, it’s a biohazard," the user wrote.
The comment triggered further discussion, with several people wondering where the wrapper had come from.

Users Offer Another Explanation
While some found the packaging unusual, others suggested there could be a simpler reason. One user explained that many international food chains, including McDonald’s, Subway and Taco Bell, get some of their packaging manufactured in India.
According to the comment, packaging with small printing or quality defects is sometimes rejected before it reaches restaurants. These unused materials may later be sold as scrap and eventually end up with local street vendors.
“Many global chains like McDonald’s, Subway and Taco Bell get some packaging made in India. Their quality-control standards are so strict that even minor defects can result in entire batches being rejected. Some of that rejected packaging reportedly finds its way to street vendors," the user commented.
Several others shared similar views, saying rejected packaging materials are sometimes resold and reused by local vendors instead of being discarded.
