Inside Nishikant Dubey’s Library On Congress Tracking India’s Politics Over Decades
If one wants to explore the many debates and controversies surrounding the Congress and its role in shaping India’s political trajectory, there may soon be a new address in the capital to turn to.
At 3, Safdarjung Lane, the official residence of Nishikant Dubey — the Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Godda in Jharkhand — preparations are underway to open a library that he says will document the history of the Indian National Congress since Independence.
The initiative, which Dubey has been quietly working on for some time, is expected to be opened to the public in the coming days.
The proposed library will house books, reports and archival material tracing political developments over the decades. According to Dubey, several volumes have been donated by well-wishers, while many others have been personally sourced by him as part of his long-standing interest in research and political history.
Among the key works in the collection is Samajik Samrasta, written by Narendra Modi during his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister. The book focuses on the idea of social harmony, emphasising the need to break caste barriers, promote equality and draw inspiration from leaders such as B. R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi in building what the Prime Minister describes as a “Viksit Bharat".
The shelves will also include The Untold Story by Brij Mohan Kaul, the former commander of India’s IV Corps. The autobiographical account offers a controversial first-hand perspective on the events leading up to the Sino-Indian War of 1962 and details Kaul’s interactions with then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The book had sparked a political debate at the time of its publication for its candid account of the war and the decisions surrounding it.
Dubey said efforts are also underway to digitise the material available in the library. The idea, he said, is to eventually integrate the repository with artificial intelligence tools so that scholars and readers across the world can access the material through a single online platform.
Apart from books, the library will feature a range of official reports, including the findings of the Shah Commission Report and the Monopolies Commission Report. According to Dubey, these documents will help readers examine different phases of governance and policy decisions taken over the decades.
The BJP MP is also working on two compilation projects. One of the proposed books will compare the Presidential addresses delivered to Parliament during the tenure of the United Progressive Alliance and the National Democratic Alliance governments. Another will analyse the Independence Day speeches delivered from the Red Fort by Congress prime ministers and those by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, offering a comparative look at their priorities and messaging.
For now, the library is expected to begin with a collection of around 250 books, reports and articles, with plans to expand the archive over time. According to sources, senior leaders from the BJP are likely to attend the inauguration when the library is formally opened to visitors in the coming week.
Following a heated exchange with the leadership of the Indian National Congress during the first part of the Budget Session, Dubey announced that he would soon set up a library aimed at documenting what he described as the damage caused by the Congress over the decades, saying it would help people understand the party’s record and its alleged lack of remorse over past decisions.
