The Jammu and Kashmir education department has launched an inquiry after a video on social media showed students at a government school in Doda singing an “inappropriate song” during their morning assembly, The Indian Express reported.

The video showed students at the Government Middle School Sichal singing: “Pukarti Ma Bharti, khoon se tilak karo, goliyon se aarti (Mother India calls, mark your forehead with blood and use bullets for worship)”.

A teacher at the school was seen showing the assembly in the background, and saying that there had been a new classification of students after their results, The Indian Express reported. The teacher was heard saying in the video: “You can see the scenes, the children have come to school, and the morning assembly is in progress… Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!”

An activist named Raja Shakeel lodged a complaint with the Doda chief education officer, alleging that the students were being exposed to “extremist and violent” teachings.

Doda Chief Education Officer Iqbal Hussain said in his order for an inquiry that a video had gone viral that showed students reciting a prayer “deemed inappropriate for minors”, The Indian Express reported. The complainant had raised concerns about the psychological impact of such content on children, the official noted.

“In view of the seriousness of the matter, an inquiry committee… is hereby constituted to conduct a thorough investigation and submit its factual report to this office within two days, along with specific comments and recommendations,” the newspaper quoted the inquiry order as saying.

The education officer told The Indian Express that the salary of the teacher has been withheld, and that a decision about any action would be taken after the inquiry report is filed.
