Indian Women's Football Team Etch History! For The First Time Ever, Young Tigresses Qualify For...

The Indian U17 women's football team produced a stunning comeback to beat Uzbekistan 2-1, securing their first-ever qualification for the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup, set to be held in China next year.

Tactical Brilliance Turns the Tide

Head coach Joakim Alexandersson's bold substitutions proved pivotal. In the 40th minute, he replaced Bonifilia Shullai with Thandamoni Baskey — a move that would ultimately change the game.

Uzbekistan had taken the lead in the 38th minute through Shakhzoda Alikhonova, whose superb volley from outside the box left India trailing and facing the prospect of elimination.

Despite creating chances in the first half, India seemed rattled, with hurried clearances and imprecise passes adding to the pressure. But Thandamoni's introduction injected fresh energy into the side. She latched onto an aerial through ball over Uzbekistan's defense, stole the ball back from defender Mariya Dakhova, cut inside, and finished at the near post in the 55th minute to level the score.

Just 11 minutes later, Thandamoni turned provider, delivering a precise assist to Anushka Kumari, who slotted home the winner and completed India's remarkable turnaround.

Historic Achievement for Indian Women's Football

The victory meant India finished top of Group G with six points, booking a spot at the AFC tournament. The Young Tigresses had last participated in the 2005 edition, when only 11 teams competed, making this India's first qualification at this age group in 18 years.

Alexandersson praised his squad's resilience, saying, “The team showed character and belief. It was a tough game, but the girls stepped up when it mattered most. This is a proud moment for Indian football."
