Indian-Origin Man Gets 22 Years In Jail For Child Sex Offences In UK, His Brother Shot Videos
A 26-year-old Indian-origin man was sentenced to 22 years in prison for child rape offences in London, on Tuesday. The convict has been identified as Vruj Patel. His brother, Kishan Patel, was awarded a 15-month jail sentence for possessing indecent images of children. The Metropolitan Police, which conducted the investigation, has urged other potential victims to come forward.
Detectives suspect there might be more victims targeted by the Patels, with offences dating back to 2018. Detective Sergeant Rob Blant, who led the investigation, described Vruj Patel as a “cowardly and opportunistic offender" who preyed on vulnerable victims for his sexual gratification.
“The threat he poses to women and children has been reflected in his sentence and his future management under the terms of the Sexual Harm Prevention Order and sex offender notification requirements for the remainder of his life," said DS Blant, according to news agency PTI.
Vruj Patel pleaded guilty to several charges, including the rape of a child under 13, assault by penetration of a child under 13, causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, rape of a woman over 16, and sexual assault by penetration. He also admitted to possessing indecent images of children and voyeurism, resulting in a lifelong entry into the UK's sex offenders' register.
Kishan Patel was sentenced for making and possessing indecent images of children and will serve a 10-year sexual harm prevention order alongside his prison term.
Vruj Patel was arrested on February 1 after Greater Manchester Police reported videos of child sexual offending found on a device sent for repair. The device belonged to Kishan Patel, but initial videos implicated Vruj Patel. Detectives identified him from footage showing his face briefly during the abuse of a young girl known to the brothers.
Further investigations revealed more videos depicting the 26-year-old committing rape against a young woman after a university night out, and voyeurism against a young girl. Detectives connected the offences to Patel through clothing and distinctive jewellery seen in the videos. Although the contact offences occurred in 2018, the voyeurism precedes this, and officers are concerned his offending continued until recently.
Following Patel's sentencing, detectives are appealing for additional victims to come forward, especially those who may have been under his care or visited his home. Victims in this case received specialised support throughout the investigation and court process. Survivors are encouraged to contact the police online or by calling 101 quoting “Operation Castline".
