Indian-Origin Banker Set To Earn Rs 500 Crore At Citigroup Faces 'Bullying' Allegations From JPMorgan Chase, Internet Divided
An Indian-origin investment banker set to earn nearly Rs 500 crore at Citigroup has come under renewed scrutiny after fresh allegations surfaced about his conduct during his previous tenure at JPMorgan Chase.
Viswas Raghavan, currently serving as Citigroup’s head of banking, was appointed to the role in February 2024. His hiring came just days after he was reportedly informed by JPMorgan that he had no long-term future at the firm.
At the time, Citigroup offered him a compensation package worth $52 million (approximately Rs 490-Rs 500 crore), positioning the move as a strategic hire aimed at strengthening its leadership bench.
However, an investigation by the Financial Times, based on discussions with more than 15 individuals familiar with the situation, has showcased a more complex picture. According to the report, Raghavan’s time at JPMorgan was marked by repeated complaints regarding his workplace behaviour.
Several colleagues alleged that he frequently used harsh and demeaning language, at times referring to staff as “a waste of calories," “ignorant", and “inadequate."
In one particularly contentious incident, he was accused of making inappropriate remarks to a group of junior bankers on their first day. As per The New York Post report, Raghavan shared a personal anecdote about a woman he once found attractive before remarking that she was now overweight. The comments reportedly led to formal complaints, though they were later denied when the matter reached human resources.
Some colleagues went further, describing him as a “bully," arguing that his conduct stood out even within the high-pressure culture of global investment banking. His management style is said to have triggered multiple internal reviews during his 23-year tenure at JPMorgan, with concerns escalating to senior leadership, including CEO Jamie Dimon. At one stage, his compensation was also reportedly reduced due to behavioural concerns.
Another controversial claim suggested that Raghavan once described his leadership style in crude terms, allegedly saying he would “grab them by the b***s." His spokesperson has denied this assertion, along with accusations that he relied on coarse or inappropriate language in professional settings.
Despite the allegations, Citigroup has firmly defended its decision to bring Raghavan on board. The bank stated that the recruitment process began in January 2024, lasted over a month, and involved extensive internal and external due diligence, including participation from senior executives and board members.
It maintained that the hiring process had been mischaracterised and described Raghavan as “a proven leader with a well-earned track record for driving results."
The controversy is notable given Raghavan’s otherwise strong reputation in the industry. Over more than two decades at JPMorgan, he rose to become one of its most senior investment bankers, playing a key role in expanding its European operations and leading major deals.
Since joining Citigroup, he has been credited with bolstering its investment banking division, attracting top talent, and contributing to strong financial performance.
Even as questions persist over his past conduct, Raghavan is now viewed by some industry insiders as a potential successor to Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser, a prospect that continues to spark debate within financial circles.
