Indian Man Gets 21 Months In UK Jail For Groping Minor Girl On British Airways Flight

A 34-year-old Indian man has been sentenced to 21 months in prison in the United Kingdom for sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl on a British Airways flight. The convict has been identified as Javed Inamdar. He was travelling from Mumbai to London on December 14, 2024, when he assaulted the girl while she was sleeping.

Inamdar, a married shipping company executive with two children, stroked the girl's hand before groping her, The Sun reported. During trial at Isleworth Crown Court, it was revealed that the girl woke up crying and screamed, “get the f*** away from me."

Soon after the girl woke up, she alerted the British Airways cabin crew. When confronted, Inamdar claimed he might have confused the girl for his wife. Cabin manager Rebecca Rooney testified that she found the girl “visibly distressed" after midnight on December 14. She had “her knees to her chest and was hugging herself", according to a report in The Metro.

“I asked her what happened, she stated the male in the seat next to her had put his hands up her jumper and had touched her breast," Rooney told the court.

Inamdar, a native of Mumbai, had no legal status in the UK and was provided housing by his employer while on conditional bail. Throughout the hearing, he was assisted by a Hindi interpreter and cried during the proceedings.

Defence attorney Lee Sergent argued that Inamdar comes from a different part of the world and had made a success of his life in India, helping his family. Sergent also noted that being on bail in the UK had been restrictive for Inamdar as he could not see his wife or children. He suggested that if given a suspended sentence, Inamdar would leave the country immediately.

However, Judge Simon Davis rejected the argument that Inamdar mistook the girl for his wife. He stated that Inamdar tested the waters by brushing the girl's hand and that the jury had found their verdict. The judge acknowledged Inamdar's waiting period in the country and his inability to communicate with his wife as factors in reducing the sentence. Nonetheless, he emphasised the country's duty to protect young girls.
